We set out to create a seemingly unattainable concoction—a light beer for IPA lovers. After dozens of controlled experiments and failed hypotheses, we finally brewed up Science. It’s a citrusy delight that’s aromatic, flavourful, and incredibly easy drinking.
And they said couldn't be done.

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, 473mL in a pint glass. From their IPA Fun Box at my favourite LCBO at Tecumseh Mall in nearby Windsor. Canned February 15/24. My 10th beer from the Sarnia, Ontario brewery, and 6th for 2025. With Sundae the cat...

Surprisingly flavourful for a lo-cal beer. Looks like apple juice under a short head. Noticeably hoppy on the nose with a decent malt presence. Plenty enough hops to taste, not as muscular as your typical IPA, but still quite enjoyable. Juicy spritzy mouthfeel, which is another surprise for a LC brew. Quite drinkable and worth a try.

Pours a picture-perfect gold colour with a nice 2cm head sitting on top. Bitter and hoppy on the nose. The taste is a lighter version of an IPA, retaining its taste and usual characteristics of a good IPA. I would consider this full flavoured considering it’s alcohol content. A bit thin on the mouthfeel though

473ml can served cold into a tulip. LCBO purchase for north of $3 CDN.
Appearance - Semi clear golden color. A small finger of white head rests on top and fizzles away reasonably quickly. Some bubbles are visible inside the glass.
Smell - Leafy hops, hints of pepper and lemon citrus. Decent grainy backbone too.
Taste - Lots of grain, very light lagerish with crackery bits. Very little in the way of noticeable hops, some general leafiness in the aftertaste, but straining hard to find any citrus. Very watery.
Mouthfeel - Quite fizzy, light bodied with crisp carbonation and slightly chalky finish.
Overall - A tasty enough light tipple, this is more session pale ale then any IPA you could imagine. Good little beer in the summer, not something I'd buy regularly.

For its ABV, this beer offers a lot of flavour but you have to drink it at the right temperature. If you drink it fresh out of the fridge you get very little, but if you take it out and drink it 30 mins later (sorry, I’m from the UK so I’m used to drinking real ales at cellar temperature) all the flavours come out.
It has an amazing bready finish that makes this beer very more(ish). I could drink this all day.

355 mL can from the brewery store; coded 20364L (Dec 29 2020) and served slightly chilled.
Pours a lightly fogged golden-orange colour, producing half a finger of loose, soapy white head that fizzles off within a minute or two. A thin collar is the only survivor - there's hardly a speck of lace, and only a few wisps of film on the surface. Grainy, bready pale malts on the nose, with indeterminate hints of citrus and tropical fruit - nothing especially interesting to report thus far.
A decent session ale that vaguely reminds me of a (very light) Antique Peepshow. Its flavours follow the aroma - grainy pale malts, faint hints of grapefruit and passion fruit, followed by some tea leafy hop bitterness that lasts through the finish, fading into a weedy, earthy aftertaste with a touch of pine resin. Light in body, with aggressive carbonation that feels spritzy and prickly on the palate, almost like that of a carbonated soft drink - feels very crisp on the palate, and moderately refreshing. Easy to polish off quickly.
Final Grade: 3.48, a B-. Science Lo-Cal isn't the most exciting session IPA I've ever had, but it'll get the job done while contributing as little as possible to that spare keg you might be carrying around. I enjoyed that earthy bitterness at the tail end to an extent - it reminded me I was actually drinking a pale ale instead of a watered-down blonde or whatever. That being said, it gives this brew a kind of old-school IPA vibe - so if you look down your nose on that sort of stuff (in favour of the juicy hazebombs that kids these days go cray-cray for), this might not be your cup of tea. I still think it's worth a shot if you're looking for something hoppy and light.
