650 mL bottle from the bottle shop; no packaging date. Served at cellar temperature.
Pours a clouded ruddy amber-copper colour, generating nearly a finger of creamy, buff-toned head that settles off within a minute or two. A few strands and specks of lace are tossed about behind it, with a tight collar and a few wisps of film also left behind. Smells mostly sweet - brown sugar and toasted malts, with bourbon and charred wood figuring in strongly; suggestions of plum and fig, too.
The flavours are along the same lines - lots of caramelized malts and sugars, toasted biscuits, and plummy, figgy dark fruit notes, with a moderately strong undercurrent of bourbon that asserts itself towards the back end; hints of wood, bourbon and burnt sugar carry on into the aftertaste. Medium in body, with light carbonation that gently froths up in the mouth; not exactly thin, but for a BBA beer, it does feel a bit lacking. Of course, the flip side of that is that it's also a fair bit more drinkable than most BBA stuff.
Final Grade: 3.74, a B. With its bourbon flavours, Judith's Prius is a 'scotch ale' in name only - but at the same time, I could see a fan of Innis & Gunn Original really enjoying this. They're along the same sort of lines: malt-forward for sure, but with whisky and wood flavours giving it that extra dimension that helps to make these mid-strength BA beers satisfying ones to drink. More of a late winter, early spring sort of beer vs. late June, but I enjoyed it enough to consider a repeat in the future.
