650 mL bottle from the brewery; no bottling date and served slightly chilled. Billed as a chocolate and vanilla milkshake IPA.
Pours an inky brownish-black colour, topped with an inch of foamy, frothy, tan-coloured head that vanishes within two minutes or so. It leaves very little behind - no lace or cap, though there is a sickly thin collar... a shame, as it started off looking strong, too. It smells of burnt grains, cacao nibs, coffee and pine sap, with some earthy, herbal notes as well as a touch of vanilla.
The chocolate and vanilla translate better to the flavour (vs. the aroma), but the hops still provide some of this brew's most prominent flavours. Initially there's dark, bready, toasty malts and toffee, with hints of plum, grapefruit, milk chocolate and vanilla coming through by mid-sip. It finishes first with an earthy, piney, slightly floral hop bitterness, followed by cacao nibs, vanilla milkshake and dark malt/lactose sweetness lingering into the aftertaste. Medium in body, with low-ish carbonation that softly brushes against the tongue, resulting in a smooth mouthfeel; moderate drinkability, though one bottle should be more than enough for any one person.
Final Grade: 3.66, a B grade. Perfect Disguise is described as a milkshake IPA, but its actual style is debatable - I found black IPA to be the closest imperfect fit. The hop flavours were nice, but the chocolate/vanilla combo just doesn't play all that nicely with a hoppy backdrop, at least IMO. Either way, it was nice to try once - which I suppose is all you really need from a one-off - but I definitely wouldn't pay ten more bucks for another bottle.
