Old school 6 row malt and corn flakes give this beer a light body with a little residual sweetness. It's not overly bitter, but still bursting with traditional IPA aroma and flavour. Whirlpool and dry hopped with Chinook, Columbus, Centennial and Cascade, it's full of piney and resinous flavours.

This unique and newly developed style is fermented cold using an ale yeast to limit the fruity yeast aromas and allow the hops to really shine through.

Bomber purchased at the brewery; no packaging date. Served slightly chilled.

Pours a mostly clear, brassy golden colour, producing one finger of soapy, foamy white head that steadily creeps downward. Within three or four minutes, it has been reduced to a sudsy collar and cap, with an arcing swath of sticky lace also left in its wake - looks great to me. Earthy on the nose - pine needles, tree bark and floral hops, with hints of grapefruit, orange and bready pale malts.

Pretty balanced for an IPA - malty and sweet-ish at the forefront, shifting towards hoppy and bitter later on. Doughy, bready malts, honey sweetness and graininess, but after that the C hops pretty much take over. Grapefruit and hints of orange, with lots of earthy, floral, spicy hops and some piney, resiny bitterness that lasts into a spicy aftertaste with suggestions of licorice; mildly warming, but the alcohol is well integrated. Medium in body, with lively carbonation that feels prickly and crisp on the palate, contributing to its frothy, satisfying mouthfeel. Good drinkability for 7% - this bomber should present no problem whatsoever for most hopheads.

Final Grade: 3.75, squeaking out a B+. Swedish Prison is the second 'cold IPA' that Refined Fool has put out in as many weeks, but I think I preferred the other one (...We Call Him Trevor). Don't get me wrong, this is still a perfectly acceptable IPA that showcases its hop varietals (particularly the Chinook and Columbus) quite effectively. The problem, if you can even call it that, is that this one doesn't offer anything especially novel in terms of flavour - though I suppose it is a fair bit more crisp and, um, lager-like than a typical IPA. If you're in the area and seeking something new and hop-forward to try, this is worth a look while it's available.
