Bomber purchased at the brewery late last year; no packaging date. Served slightly chilled.
Pours a lightly fogged golden-amber colour, briefly sporting an inch-thick cap of soapy, foamy white head. Within a few minutes it has wilted down to a tight collar and filmy cap, depositing an even coat of beautiful lace as it recedes - looks great to me. Weakly aromatic, with suggestions of prune yogurt, wheaty grain and vanilla.
Off to a slow start, with a lacto 'gym sock' funkiness that I found off-putting at first - fortunately, it kind of faded into the background as my palate adjusted. There's gritty, grainy, wheaty pale malt background sweetness, with vanilla also developing early on; meanwhile, the plum supplies a pleasantly sweet, stone fruit juiciness that pairs nicely with the lactic acidity. A little salty at the finish, with lessened funk and vanilla reverberating into a slightly sharp aftertaste. Light in body with middling carbonation and not much bite, resulting in a slightly frothy, prickly texture. I found it very poundable, but a bomber is more than enough for me.
Final Grade: 3.89, a B+. Hiawatha Nights started out rough around the edges, but turned out well enough in the end, which seems on point for a beer named after the (former) local horse race track. The vanilla is noticeable without being overbearing, and I must admit to being a sucker for plum beers in general, sour or not - also, the gose saltiness works very well with plum fruit in particular IMO. Put this in a tallboy and charge something reasonable, and I'd buy it again.
