Single Friend is unbound by the rules of ordinary IPA’s. Crisper, cleaner, and curiously crushable, this cold-filtered and lagered stag rides alone

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, 473mL in a Teku glass. From their IPA Fun Box 6-pack at my favourite LCBO at Tecumseh Mall in nearby Windsor. Canned April 18/24. My 32nd beer from the Sarnia, Ontario brewery, and 22nd for 2026. With Sundae the cat...

Look: Pours a pretty bright yellow with a thick white head.
Smell: Has a sort of musky but malty aroma, almost like a hybrid farmhouse ale.
Taste: Malts, barley, and has a creamy taste to it as well that I wasn’t expecting but really enjoyed. Some floral notes as well.
Feel: Feels lighter than it is. Pretty easy drinker.
Overall: This should have been better but it wasn’t bad by any means. I just wish it had more flavors, there was a way it could have had some subtle fruit or something.

473 mL can from the brewery; canned Feb 9 2022 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a bright, clear golden-yellow colour, capped with roughly one inch of puffy, soapy, sparkling white head that dissipates within several minutes' time. A wide collar of creamy suds lives on, with an attractive, arcing pattern of lace imprinted onto the glass - looks good to me. Quite citrusy on the nose; lots of tangerine and grapefruit, with suggestions of nectarine, tropical fruitiness and cedar.
It's not bad - gritty, grainy pale malt flavours provide some scaffolding, with Sasquatch and Sabro hop flavours filling in the remainder of the profile. There's tangerine and apricot, with hints of grapefruit and cantaloupe; resiny, woodsy hop flavours gain momentum towards the finish, followed by coconut and herbal hop bitterness lingering into the aftertaste briefly before it dries out. Medium in body, with moderate carbonation that lends some prickliness to this brew's smooth, slick mouthfeel. Average drinkability - it's not marketed as a DIPA (and at 7%, it barely qualifies to begin with), but I think it's 'strong' enough to pull off the ruse.
Final Grade: 3.77, a B+. Given that I am not a big fan of either of the hop varietals used (Sabro in particular), it's not exactly surprising that I'm not smitten with Single Friend. That being said, it's still a perfectly serviceable IPA that I managed to enjoy anyhow. The "cold IPA" aspect also makes it somewhat more clean-tasting and drinkable than your average 7% IPA. A mixed bag of pros and cons, so try it for yourself and determine which outweighs the other; as for me, I'll give it another shot at some point.

Pours on the lighter shade of gold, large healthy head. Citrus and bitterness on the smell. The taste is juicy, yet mild, not overly bitter, reminiscent of a lighter session IPA. The 7% alcohol is hidden. Crushable and dangerous. Very dry aftertaste
