Bomber purchased at the brewery; no packaging date. Served slightly chilled.
Pours a murky orange-amber color with loads of flocculent sediment; it's crowned with one finger of foamy white head that, ahem, settles down within three minutes or so. A tight, quarter-inch cap and collar of creamy suds remains in place, with a beautiful curtain of even lace draped across the interior of the glass - looks good, perhaps a bit more 'muddy' than hazy. Floral on the nose, with hints of grapefruit, passion fruit, earthy hops and suggestions of berries.
It's alright - I'm getting hints of white grapefruit, passion fruit, melon & white grape, followed by a pithy, citrusy finish with floral, mildly piney bitterness. Suggestions of tropical fruit persist briefly into the aftertaste, which is off-dry and shows minimal signs of its nearly 7% abv. Medium in body, with a fluffy, airy mouthfeel and sharp bite. It's over-carbonated, which in practice is a minor annoyance for me, but actually does make it a chore to drink 650 mL of this.
Final Grade: 3.48, a B-. Settle Down isn't one of the Fools' better small batch IPAs in recent memory, but I don't necessarily regret trying it. I mean, there's nothing particularly bad about this pale ale, though there are a number of small flaws that bug me, adding up to a mediocre experience overall. If they bring this back, I'd probably give it at least one more chance, but over-carbonated IPAs have always bugged me on a deeply personal, animal-instinct sort of level. Surely you understand.
