Raw ale refers to a very old method of brewing, traditionally used in farmhouse style beers, where the wort is never brought to a boil. This gives the beer a unique characteristic as the grain and straw-like flavours from the malts come through much more clearly. We brewed our Raw IPA with Kveik, a traditional Norwegian farmhouse yeast, and hopped it with Huell Melon and Strata, bittered it with a Warrior hop tea, and added some juniper for good measure. The result is a distinctive IPA that's a refreshing delight on the palate.

We're pretty sure French people like raw things, so we've named this beer accordingly. If you are French and you do not like raw things, je suis désolé.

Bomber from the brewery; no packaging date and served slightly chilled.

Pours a bright, crystal clear golden-yellow colour, crowned with two fingers of foamy, soapy white head that drops off to a lumpy, quarter-inch cap and collar of lovely suds. An attractive band of doily-patterned lacing is also deposited - now this is one nice lookin' beer. It smells gritty, like grain husks and whole grain bread, with a hint of something herbal & evergreen. The hop aromas are subtle, reminiscent of strawberry and honeydew melon.

Unique flavour profile: orange, grapefruit and melon come through first, with gritty grain husks and whole grain bread playing a backup role. The kveik yeast adds some, uh, yeastiness - ok, not the most helpful description, but it's hard to describe... I guess I'll go with fruity and spicy, like a farmhouse ale. It finishes with a clean, herbal bitterness that doesn't last, with just a hint of juniper persisting into a kveiky, melony aftertaste. Medium in body, with finely bubbled carbonation that fizzles gently on the tongue; very smooth mouthfeel. It's quite drinkable - that 6.7% is well-hidden, but became discernible as I reached the bottoms of the bomber.

Final Grade: 3.86, a B+. The Frenchman's Baby is quirky, but I suppose that's appropriate for a beer that went through the rigmarole described in the brewery's marketing spiel. One of the better small batch IPAs the Fools have put out over the last year or so - many of which have already been brought back at least once, so I'd say this one is worthy of similar treatment. I might be tossing in a few bonus points for creativity, but at the end of the day I rather liked this and would buy it again.
