Everyone loves a Fat Baby. Whether you like ours or not is up to you but it would be rude not to pretend it's cute at the very least.
Fat Baby is a Continually Hopped IPA, meaning it's fed generous hop additions at every possible moment during the course of the brew. Hops are added at 13 different points: mash, first runnings, 90 min, 75 min, 60 min, 45 min, 30 min, 15 min, 0 min, whirlpool, and three separate dry hops. Apollo, Simcoe, and Zythos hops take centre stage, creating a piney, resinous, citrus-heavy bitter beast that will have you crying for more. 100 IBU

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, 473mL in a pint glass. My 18th beer from the Sarnia, Ontario brewery, and 8th for 2026. Ridiculously recommended by Gracie the cat...

473 ml can that came ina mixed 6 pack of IPA's from Refined Fool. Cost was $4 CDN. Canned April 26, 2023. Served cold into a tulip.
Appearance - Rich copper colored brew and topped with a couple of fingers of dense and fluffy white head. Very good head retention. Hazy with traces of sediment, but not super hazy or turbid in appearance.
Smell - Light fruity notes, I'm getting a passionfruit and grapefruit combo. Semi sweet.
Taste - Somewhat grainy initially then big leafy flavors, and some bitter citrus. Grapefruit is the name of the game here. Solid bready backbone and the bitterness stays well inter the aftertaste. Bordering on being too bitter for the sake of being bitter, but it doesn't quite get there.
Mouthfeel - Fairly full bodied, carbonation is medium-light and overall the beer seems substantial, not that it's super strong, it just fills the mouth and clings to the crevasses more than most IPA's.
Overall - A good IPA, with a nose that deceives the flavor profile and has a certain weightiness that one normally associates with a stronger and heavier beer. Good addition to the Mix a 6 and one of Refined Fool's better offerings.

Bomber from the brewery; no packaging date and served slightly chilled.
Pours foggy brassy-amber, capped with two fingers of foamy, off white-coloured head that seeps off within three or four minutes' time. A delicate ring of spidery lace is deposited in its wake, with a creamy collar and patchy cap also staying in place - looks good to me. Piney, earthy hops and resin on the nose, with added notes of grapefruit and grainy, lightly caramelized malts.
A flavourful IPA, but it's definitely on the bitter side, as you'd expect for 100 IBU - grainy, bready malts and caramelized sugars underneath, with grapefruit being dominant initially. Hints of pineapple and orange show up by mid-sip, with piney, resiny, earthy hop bitterness tying up the back end nicely; grapefruit, citrus pith and earthy, resiny notes persist into the aftertaste. Medium in body, with moderate carbonation that adds a prickly bite to this brew's smooth, slightly frothy mouthfeel.
Final Grade: 3.8, a B+. Fat Baby Continually Hopped IPA is both flavourful and intense, but the hop flavours are somewhat lacking in diversity. Don't get me wrong, the 'grapefruit & pine resin' theme is right up my alley: akin to a classic, old-school west coast IPA, except that the 'continual hopping' really emphasizes the resiny, bitter aspects of that flavour profile. If you were hoping for a hazy or juicy NEIPA-type deal, this is emphatically not what you were hoping for, but it's still a perfectly fine pale ale in its own right.
