Now a 5.7% brown ale. Part of the 2024 Winter Beer sports pack from RF. Served cold into a pint glas.s
Appearance - Clear, dark brown in colored with shades of auburn. A finger plus of off-white head with good staying power.
Smell - Malty. Some brown sugar, caramel with a bit of a leathery earthiness to the aroma. Not a terribly intense nose.
Taste - Matches the nose, but with amplified flavor. Semi-bitter, with some nuttiness, caramel and some earthiness. Well rounded and full flavor.
Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with fairly expressive carbonation. Semi-dry.
Overall - My favorite brew of this pack thus far, maybe it's just me but a well brewed nice brown ale just isn't common in these parts and Cross Country Sniper is a reminder that there needs to be more of them.

UPDATE: Refined Fool has been re-using beer names. Cross Country Sniper was originally a hazelnut espresso porter, but it is now a brown ale. If I get a chance to try it, I will update this review (and leave the original porter review for posterity).
473 mL can from the brewery, one of four from their "Winter Danger Sports Pack". Dated Dec 1 2022 and served barely chilled.
Pours an inky, opaque black colour with copper-brown highlights; this produces nearly two inches of fluffy, foamy, light tan-coloured head that seeps off within five minutes or so. A narrow ring of lace and tight collar encircle a bubbly, filmy cap - looks good so far. Hazelnut syrup, cocoa and baker's chocolate on the nose, with a decent espresso kick also coming through. Hints of vanilla, roasted grain, maybe a touch of dried dark fruits.
It's not bad, but it is sweeter than I'd like. Caramel, hazelnut syrup, dark chocolate and date fruit come through at first, with roasted grains, vanilla, and espresso coming later on. Coffee bitterness on the back end, with cocoa and caramel fading into an aftertaste of hazelnut, chocolate and coffee roastiness. Medium in body, with a smooth mouthfeel punctuated by rather light carbonation; gives you the sticky lips, a sure sign of a sugary brew. The alcohol is well-hidden, but it has limited drinkability, i.e. one can is plenty.
Final Grade: 3.59, a B grade. Cross Country Sniper is not a particularly well-balanced brew - you might say it's all ski, no snipe. OK fine, no one would say that about anything outside of an actual biathlon competition. The hazelnut, which I assume to be a flavouring syrup, is not much of an asset IMO, as it over-sweetens the porter and clings on way too long into the aftertaste. A serviceable seasonal porter, fine to try once but not something I'd look for again.
