Modernizing the original IPA style, we used all British malts, all British hops, and British Ale yeast to create a wonderfully balanced beer. It features a solid malt backbone with moderate bitterness, well balanced with British hops Olicana and Harlequin. 40 IBU

Tallboy from the brewery; no canning date and served slightly chilled.

This beer is foggy orange-amber in colour; a deliberately rough pour produces less than a finger of loose, soapy, off white-coloured head that fades within a couple of minutes. A dotted morse code message of lace is printed onto the glass, with a bubbly collar and patchy cap living on - looks about right. Gritty grains, dirty herbal hops and grassy hay on the nose, accompanied by lesser hints of passion fruit and underripe stone fruit; maybe a touch of mango.

The flavour profile clashes with itself: fruity suggestions of pineapple and grapefruit start things off, with hints of bready malts, toasted grains and caramelized sugars. Finishes with earthy, dirty, herbal hops mixed together with muddled citrus and underripe stone fruit; moderate bitterness, with earthiness lingering well after each sip. Medium in body, with moderate carbonation that adds some bite to this brew's smooth, fluffy mouthfeel; fair drinkability.

Final Grade: 3.51, barely eking out a B grade. Let's Have a Chinwag! is sort of a mixed bag, i.e. it includes elements taken from both the English and American styles of India pale ale, but it's not a very good approximation of either, nor do I think it's a particularly good hybrid. The dirty/earthy hops at the finish just do not mesh well with the fruity forefront. It was still neat to try a beer brewed with two novel English hop strains, but I don't think it's worth bringing back.
