473 mL can from the brewery; no canning date and served slightly chilled.
Pours a turbid, hazy goldenrod colour, producing roughly two fingers of soapy, foamy white head that falls off within a few minutes' time. A respectable smattering of stringy lace clings to the glass, with a tight collar and patchy, sudsy cap floating upon the surface. I am getting notes of watermelon and honeydew melon on the nose, with sweet hints of pineapple & strawberry; suggestions of citrus and herbal hops, too, and a faint whiff of ethanol as it warms.
The flavour profile follows the aroma: honeydew melon, strawberry and cantaloupe initially, with hints of pineapple, mango and grapefruit bitterness rounding out the back end. Herbal hops, lemon pith and melon carry on into the aftertaste. A little warming/boozy and sweet, but no more so than an average DIPA. Medium in body, with moderately low carbonation and a smooth, somewhat slick mouthfeel. Fair drinkability - I enjoyed this glass, but it's too strong and/or palate-exhausting to drink in multiples.
Final Grade: 3.69, a B grade. Like Darren's Internet Search History, this beer may or may not contain a titillating cavalcade of world-class melons. OK, perhaps I'm exaggerating - this is billed as a 'melon IPA', but the melon-esque elements are solely hop-derived. Don't get me wrong, the melon flavours come through well enough, but I can't help but feel as if some real melons, or even melon flavouring, might've given this pale ale an added punch. A middling IPA from the Fools - worth a shot, but not worth going out of your way for.
