473 mL can from the brewery; no canning date and served slightly chilled. Billed as a 'rice IPA' brewed with Sorachi Ace hops.
Pours a lightly fogged golden-blonde colour, sporting more than two fingers of fluffy, foamy white head. It dissipates within a matter of minutes, eroding down to a frothy collar and patchy cap; there's no shortage of lace, that's for sure. Hints of dill and herbal hops on the nose, with suggestions of white bread, lemon and cereal grains.
Clean-tasting and fairly subtle/nuanced for an IPA: a tad sweet at the forefront, with cereal grain sweetness, bready pale malts and candied lemon peel. Mildly herbal on the back end, with suggestions of dill and lemon fading into a citrusy aftertaste. Medium-light in body, with moderate carbonation that attempts to overcome the slick mouthfeel; the low-ish abv and herbal, citrusy flavours should make for a highly quaffable pale ale, but the mouthfeel is working against it.
Final Grade: 3.66, a serviceable B grade. The Ol' Razzle Dazzle does feature a few interesting flavours, largely thanks to the Sorachi Ace, but the overall experience was something of a mixed bag. Drinks more like an American pale ale than an IPA: not an inherently bad thing, and more of an observation than a complaint. It must be the rice that makes for the clingy, un-refreshing mouthfeel, which I felt detracted from my enjoyment of the beer.
