Tallboy from the brewery; no canning date. Served slightly chilled.
Pours foggy golden-yellow, with two fingers of bumpy, foamy white head rising from the surface. About five minutes later, a wide collar of creamy suds still remains, surrounding a patchy, filmy cap; beautiful lace deposition. It smells of doughy malts, grain husks, apples and grassy hops, with lesser hints of white grape and tropical fruit.
A passable summer wheat beer: the flavour profile consists of gritty grains and whole wheat bread, backed by citrus peel and weedy, earthy hops. Hints of apple & white grape skins too, with a dirty, herbal aftertaste. Medium in body, with moderately assertive carbonation that feels frothy on the tongue; smooth, satisfying mouthfeel, which may be the highlight of this wheat ale. Good drinkability, but at 5.6% it's probably too strong to be a serious session selection.
Final Grade: 3.71, a B grade. Totes is an above average wheat ale, nothing more or less. A little fruitier than most American wheats, attributable to the Nelson Sauvin and Ella hops - it's no Oberon, but I wouldn't turn one down on a hot summer evening. Worth a shot, assuming you enjoy North American wheats in the first place.
