This Midwest IPA blends two classic styles—the crisp bitterness of a West Coast IPA coupled with the juicy character of an East Coast. Brewed with two experimental hop varieties, Lotus and HBC 1019, offering bright tropical and orange notes. Share with Dougs, hide from Garys.

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, 473mL in a pint glass. From their IPA Fun Box 9, at my favourite LCBO at Tecumseh Mall in nearby Windsor. Canned September 27/24. My 16th beer from the Sarnia, Ontario brewery, and 6th for 2026. With Sundae the cat's permission, of course...

473 mL can from the brewery; no canning date and served slightly chilled.

Pours a relatively clear golden honey colour, fitted with a pillowy crown of foam more than two fingers high. Wilting away at a steady pace, it coats the glass with a half-inch curtain of even lace as it's reduced to a tight, creamy collar and sudsy cap over the next five minutes or so. Fruity aroma consisting of honeydew melon, guava, orange and orchard fruit, with minor notes of bubble gum, grape, vanilla and a light honeyed sweetness.

Tastes sweet and fruity at the forefront - I'm getting hints of grape, melon, guava and peach, with touches of orange peel and sugary cotton candy. Bready malts, honey and peaches in syrup come through by mid-sip, with herbal, spicy hop bitterness on the back end; finishes boozy-sweet, with faint suggestions of vanilla and coconut dissipating into a warming, spicy aftertaste. Medium-full in body, with moderately low carbonation that gently rolls along the tongue, giving some prickliness to this brew's smooth, slick mouthfeel. It's easy enough to drink at 7.5%, but one serving is plenty tonight, thanks.

Final Grade: 3.89, a B+. Refined Fool frequently uses their Tiny Batch Series to experiment with unusual or uncommon hop varietals, with I Wish Doug Was More Like Gary being a more recent example. This might actually be one of their best small batch IPAs of 2023 if you ask me, though it's also starting to straddle the line between single and double IPA. A little on the strong side, but that just makes it a solid pairing for the cold, wet, generally lousy weather we've had over the last week.
