473 mL can from the brewery; dated Sep 29 2023 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a clear pale amber colour, producing nearly two fingers of foamy, off white-coloured head that fizzles off within a couple of minutes. It leaves behind a nice coat of arc-patterned lace as it's reduced to a tight collar and filmy cap - looks like an oktoberfestbier to me. Muted aroma that drops hints of honey, grassy hops, caramelized sugars and biscuity malts.
It's a serviceable, malt-forward German-ish lager: I'm tasting toasted grains and doughy, biscuity malts, with hints of caramel and nuttiness developing by mid-sip. There is some herbal noble hop presence on the back end, but the aforementioned malt flavours remain front & center; finishes nutty-sweet, but dries off a little in the aftertaste. Light in body, with moderately low carbonation that brushes softly against the palate; feels smooth and satisfying on the tongue, with excellent drinkability. At 4.6%, it's something I could conceivably enjoy, or at least tolerate, all night.
Final Grade: 3.54, a B grade. Hasselhoff! isn't half bad, and I'm sure the real Hoff will have no problem with this probably-not-legal use of his likeness - remember, the Germans are famous for their sense of humour. The label says "oktoberfest" which is not a style in and of itself, and it's definitely on the lighter (abv) side for either a marzen or a festbier. So sure, dunkel is close enough, I guess - it's equally average regardless of how you want to categorize it. The two cans I had were fine, and if it's ever brought back then I'll buy two more.
