473 mL can from the brewery; no packaging date. Served barely chilled.
Pours hazy orange-amber, giving rise to two fingers of fluffy, foamy white head that lasts for a little over five minutes. By that point, it has dropped down to a wide, soapy collar and thin cap, with a beautiful coat of thick lace smeared against the glass - it's quite attractive, at least visually. The aroma is mildly fruity, with hints of grapefruit, passion fruit and lime as well as some wheat graininess.
Tastes more impressive than it smells - actually rather flavourful for only 3.5%. Passion fruit and pineapple come through, as do citrusy suggestions of grapefruit and lime zest; wheaty malts and grain husk in the background. Finishes along the same lines: wheat, citrus & tropical fruits ending abruptly before an off-dry aftertaste. Light-ish in body, with moderate carbonation that brushes gently across the tongue; feels smooth, soft, and surprisingly juicy for such a light beer.
Final Grade: 3.72, a B grade. AI isn't a remarkable pale ale, but it's pretty good for a session IPA. Part of that opinion may be related to this can's freshness - it's a few weeks old at most, whereas the session IPAs you can find at the LCBO are more like a few months old, at best. All hoppy pale ales are obviously best served fresh, but hazy session IPAs in particular seem to degrade very quickly. I wouldn't be surprised to see this in one of Refined Fool's upcoming sampler packs - in which case, hopefully you'll enjoy it at least as much as I did.
