473 mL can from the brewery; dated Nov 27 2023 and served barely chilled. Part of their "Winter Danger Sports Pack".
Pours jet black, boasting two inches of billowing, foamy tan-coloured head that settles off within the next five minutes or so. A generous collar of creamy froth stays put, with an arcing pattern of lovely lacing imprinted onto the glass - it's a great-looking stout so far. Roasted grains, cocoa and coffee grounds on the nose, with subtle berry fruitiness buried in the background; smells pretty much like a typical stout.
It tastes alright; a little sweet, but reasonably well-balanced for a flavoured stout. I do get a little hint of cranberry tartness off the hop, backed by roasted grains, dark chocolate and cocoa; sweeter on the back end, with honey, cranberry juice and roasted coffee bitterness. Minor cranberry astringency fades into a roasty, slightly metallic aftertaste with some ethanol warmth. Medium-bodied, with moderately low carbonation that agitates the palate gently; feels smooth and a little clingy on the tongue. Decent drinkability considering its abv, but one can should be enough.
Final Grade: 3.7, a B grade. Ski Ballet is a middling entry in Refined Fool's Winter Danger Sports Pack. The cranberry adds a pleasant twist to an otherwise boilerplate strong stout, with the honey providing some background sweetness. This is a beer that I might drink again next Christmas, but it's not a stout I see myself craving throughout the year. Worth a shot.
