30 IBU. Crisp, clean, and delicately balanced. Subdued maltiness and subtle fruit character round out this golden German style ale.

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, from their Summer Beer League boxset from my favourite The Beer Store on Goyeau St. in nearby downtown Windsor. My second beer from the Sarnia, ON brewery.

473 mL can from the LCBO, included in Refined Fool's Summer Beer League mixed pack. Dated Apr 23 2024 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a crystal clear golden-yellow colour, generating one finger of loose, soapy white head that disintegrates over the next two minutes or so. A tight collar remains, encircling some filmy wisps on the surface; swirling the glass produces some patchy lacing. Clean, wholesome aroma of grainy malts, bread and grassy, spicy hops, with suggestions of orchard fruit and lemon zest.
The flavours basically follow the nose - grainy malts, bready sweetness and a hint of doughiness, helped along by hints of appleskin and grassy, spicy, slightly herbal noble hops that dissipate into a grainy finish and off-dry aftertaste. Light-ish in body, with low carbonation that weakly brushes across the tongue, resulting in a rather limp, smooth mouthfeel that doesn't seem optimal for this kind of beer. Drinks like a less-hoppy, undercarbonated pilsner - easy enough to toss back, but pretty forgettable overall.
Final Grade: 3.63, a B grade. The Fools have brewed a handful of kölsches over the years, all of which have been decent, if unremarkable. Throwing Things more or less continues that trend, as I wouldn't say it's a major improvement over their past efforts. The relatively tepid mouthfeel is my biggest complaint, but I also feel that this brew lacks some of the little details and/or nuances that you get with really good examples of this style, e.g. maybe a vinous note, or a crisp, bone-dry finish. If you gravitate towards German-style beers and just need something yella to wash down your grub, this'll get the job done.
