Death Row, our brand new fruit punch IPA, pays tribute to the lives of innocent fruit (by featuring their remains in a beer). This one is a tropical fruit medley made from Comet hops and real pineapple, mango and blood orange. 20 IBU

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, 473mL in a pint glass. From their IPA Fun Box 9 at my favourite LCBO at Tecumseh Mall in nearby Windsor. Canned November 12/24. My 14th beer from the Sarnia, Ontario brewery, and 4th for 2026. With Sundae the cat's strict permission, and love...

473 mL can from the brewery; dated Aug 26 2024 and served slightly chilled.

Pours hazy and turbid, its golden marmalade-coloured body loaded with flakes of sediment; seated atop is one finger of loose, soapy white head that fizzles within two minutes. A frothy collar and thin cap live on, with a modest smattering of lace scattered onto the glass. The aroma is reminiscent of fruit punch, with mango, pineapple, orange and grapefruit all present and accounted for.

The fruit flavours are robust and seemingly authentic, but the base IPA itself is too timid to really shine through, limiting its impact on the experience. Crushed pineapple and ripe mango stand out in particular, with blood orange, melon and mandarin orange developing by mid-sip. Finishes with grapefruit pith and grassy hops, but it's mango and melon that linger into a fruity aftertaste. Medium-full in body, with mild carbonation that lightly tickles the surface of the palate; smooth, slightly juicy mouthfeel that sort of gives you the sticky lips. Quite drinkable, without much sign of that 7%.

Final Grade: 3.76, a B+. Death Row sounds worse than it actually is. In all seriousness, I appreciated this for its real fruit character: more of a blood orange presence might've helped its case, though I fear that might also reduce its approachability. This isn't worth going out of your way for, and if you're interested specifically in an IPA, it's barely relevant... but if a strong, fruity pale ale sounds good to you, then sure, take a chance.
