The village idiot is, in strict terms, a person locally known for being ignorant or annoying. To summarize, we are all village idiots and this beer is just a liquid participation ribbon.
Brewed with Columbus and Citra hops, this 6.4% West Coast IPA is moderately bitter with a pleasant burst of citrus. 45 IBU

473 mL can from the LCBO; no canning date and served slightly chilled.
Pours a clear pale golden colour, kicking up half an inch of loose, soapy white head that vanishes within a minute or two. A thin, soapy cap and modest collar live on, with good lace deposition after each sip. Fruity, grapefruit-laden aroma with hints of lime, white grape, passion fruit and spicy hops.
A very solid West Coast IPA. Flavours of grapefruit remain the focal point, accented with notes of lemon, lime, grainy malts and maybe a hint of melon. Peppery, pithy hops rise up towards the finish, along with an earthy, resiny bitterness that lingers on the tastebuds, extending the aftertaste considerably. Medium in body, with moderately assertive, tiny-bubbled carbonation that adds some bite to this ale's smooth mouthfeel. I found this really easy to toss back, but I love me a bitter IPA.
Final Grade: 4.0, eking out an A-. I'm pretty fond of the Village Idiot. I would not call this a complicated, nuanced or even an especially creative IPA, but I do think it's very well executed - moreso than many of this brewery's other pale ales. I have never considered myself a huge fan of Columbus/CTZ hops, but this beer does make a compelling case for them, at least in the context of bracingly bitter, West Coast IPAs - and of course, the Citra contributes to its delightful aroma. I think this is one of Refined Fool's top 5 IPAs of 2024, and will buy some more while it's still fresh and available.
