A bold and balanced American IPA showcasing bright citrus and floral notes from Citra and Centennial hops, complemented by a crisp, hoppy bitterness for a classic finish.

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, 473mL in a pint glass. From their Winter Beer League 6-pack at my favourite but now closed The Beer Store on Goyeau St. in nearby downtown Windsor. My 23rd beer from the Sarnia, Ontario brewery, 23rd of '26. With Sundae the cat...

473 mL can from the LCBO, included in Refined Fool's 2024 Beer League winter mixed pack. Dated Nov 5 2024 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a hazy orange amber colour, giving rise to one finger of loose, soapy white head that collapses within a couple of minutes' time. A frothy collar of suds lives on, surrounding an otherwise empty surface; plenty of lace deposition with each sip. Light hints of bready malts and caramel on the nose, with notes of lemon, pine forest, grapefruit and gooseberry also coming through.
It's a solid west coast IPA. Whole grain bread, toasted malts and caramelized sugars overlap with lemon and grapefruit pithiness on the front end, followed by a surge of floral, piney hops and earthy, resiny bitterness nearer the finish. Suggestions of grapefruit in the aftertaste are outlasted by a dank, resiny note that lingers. Medium in body, with moderate carbonation that gently agitates the surface of the palate, resulting in a smooth, somewhat slick mouthfeel. The bitterness may limit its drinkability for some, but if you're used to westies then it shouldn't present much of an issue.
Final Grade: 3.79, a B+. Jean Skier doesn't exactly reinvent the wheel, but I still think it's one of the better Refined Fool IPAs I've tried in the last year or so. The Citra and Centennial hops work their usual magic, while the Pahto adds an earthy, herbal quality to the mix, as well as a nice, clean bitterness. If they brewed this on a more regular basis, I'd probably pick it up once in a while, as a changeup from their juicier, hazier Van Full of Weirdos.
