473 mL can from the LCBO, included in Refined Fool's 2025 Beer League summer mixed pack. Dated Mar 24 2025 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a crystal clear golden colour, kicking up nearly a finger of loose, soapy white head that disintegrates within a couple of minutes. A thin, frothy collar and a wispy film remain on the surface, with very little lace deposition - looks normal enough so far. The aroma is malty, comprised of graininess, bready sweetness, orchard fruits and low-key grassiness; I'm also getting a whiff of nail polish remover, but it's faint enough to not be a serious problem.
It tastes alright. Bready, doughy pale malt sweetness for the most part, with grains, apples and a touch of honey by mid-sip. Fruity conclusion with a wisp of grassy hops, fading into an off-dry aftertaste. Light-medium in body, with low carbonation that meekly agitates the surface of the palate; the mouthfeel is smooth and a little slick, lacking in crispness. Gulping back one serving is not difficult, but I'll pass on a refill.
Final Grade: 3.53, a B grade. Twelve Second Injury is not the Fools' first attempt at a kölsch (or their second, or third, etc.), which is why I'm disappointed to say that this isn't any better than their last several tries, and may in fact be the weakest one yet. Mastering this style is no easy feat, but even compared to many of the other domestic kölsch I've tried, this is nothing to write home about. You could've told me this was a blonde ale, and I wouldn't have batted an eye - it simply lacks the crispness and the little nuances that you get with a really good kölsch. OK as mix pack filler, but otherwise underwhelming.
