Oak Aged IPA

This Frankenstein beer combines pleasant citrus and fruit notes alongside subtle aromas of vanilla and oak. The bad boy was aged on specialty oak spirals, helping to create a well balanced and truly unique late winter ale.

Note: This name is a marketing tactic to see if writing the word Brah in large bright letters will draw in groups of brahs. An oak aged IPA isn't typically what brahs are slamming when they pop their collars, squirt in some Dippity Do, and hit the club, so we'll see what happens. 70 IBU

473 mL can from the brewery; no canning date. Served slightly chilled.

Pours a foggy orange-amber colour, causing more than two fingers of thick, soapy white head to erupt from the surface. More than five minutes later, I'm left with a frothy cap and a wide, sudsy collar, with a lovely curtain of lace draped around the glass; looks excellent so far. I'm less enthusiastic about the aroma, which comes off as muddled - there's doughy, bready malts and light caramel, with hints of piney, herbal hops, grapefruit and lumber.

It's a blunt instrument, but I like it more than I probably should. Bready, lightly toasted malts, caramelized sugars and a dollop of honey, along with piney, herbal hops and lots of earthy, resiny bitterness. Oak and booze form a tag team later on, clearing the ring of everyone else, save for the earthy, resiny notes that continue writhing into an immortal oak aftertaste. Medium in body, with moderate carbonation that brushes briskly across the surface of the tongue; a bit sticky, clinging to the palate longer than needed. Poor drinkability, but fun to experience.

Final Grade: 3.85, a B+. Brah. 1. A moronic familiar noun that became fetch. 2. One of Refined Fool's cooler small batch IPAs within recent memory. The aftertaste is miraculously self-reviving: I can only describe that lingering note as woodlike and weakly astringent. It's weird, but at this point in my beer geek career, 'weird' is a very effective way to pique my interest. With a couple of tweaks, this could become a very good double IPA: for instance, a more robust malt bill, or a more varied hop profile, depending on which direction you want to take it.
