"You're releasing a pumpkin beer in the spring? Have you lost your mind?"
Honestly we have been perfecting a beer that is set to release this fall in the LCBO, and this Tiny Batch turned out so good we figured it was worth sharing (no matter how angry it makes the pumpkin haters).
Pumpkin Pie Haircutted Freak is a perfectly balanced 5.6% pumpkin ale with just the right pumpkin/spice combination to remind you that Thanksgiving is only 6 months away.

473 mL can from the brewery; dated Feb 5 2025 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a clear golden-orange colour, producing more than an inch of soapy, frothy white head that seeps away over the next five minutes or so. Fantastic lace deposition, with a thin collar and sudsy cap lasting on; goofy haircut notwithstanding, it's an attractive beer. The aroma does remind me of pumpkin pie, with notes of brown sugar, baked squash and moderate spiciness; nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice, and maybe a touch of ginger.
Not bad. I'm getting bready malts and a light caramel sweetness, with pumpkin pie filling coming through by mid-sip. The spices assert themselves thereafter: nutmeg in particular, but cloves, cinnamon and ginger, too. Relatively dry finish, though there is some low-level residual spiciness in the aftertaste. Medium in body, with low carbonation and a smooth, satisfying mouthfeel; very drinkable for a spiced ale, but not something I'd consume in multiples.
Final Grade: 3.83, a respectable B+. Refined Fool has released hundreds of beers over the last 11 years, but for one reason or another, they've never bothered with an annual pumpkin ale. They *have* dabbled with pumpkin on occasion, but it always ends up being a one-off. Perhaps Pumpkin Pie Haircutted Freak will be the brew that finally fills that gap in their otherwise extensive portfolio. Of course, there's still room for improvement: the spice level is spot on, but some pie crust sweetness would improve this one considerably IMO. I'll keep an eye out for the follow-up batch this autumn.
