473 mL can from the LCBO, included in Refined Fool's 2025 Beer League summer mixed pack. Dated Mar 19 2025 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a relatively clear orange-amber colour, kicking up more than an inch of bubbly, foamy, off white-coloured head that lasts for the better part of five minutes. A frothy collar and filmy cap are left behind, with lots of messy lace deposition over the course of the session. Subdued aromas of earthy, grassy hops and toasted grains, with hints of caramel and a touch of coffee.

It's your standard amber ale: malty and a little sweet, including flavours of toasted grains, bready malts, caramelized sugars and caramel apple. Earthy, dirty hops and a touch of coffee crop up at the finish, with toasted grains, caramel and bruised apple fading into a malty aftertaste that clings to the tastebuds. Medium in body, with low carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel that aids this amber's drinkability. A little boring, but otherwise a textbook amber.

Final Grade: 3.68, a B grade. As fate would have it, this is the second 5.6% amber/red ale I've had from Refined Fool in as many days. I don't think Esports Training is as good as the other one (Milk Bags): this is clearly a more traditional Canadian amber, in that the malts are doing all of the heavy lifting, and the hops are very orthodox. However, that makes for a less interesting and/or memorable ale, if you ask me. I mean, there's nothing wrong with it - but many (if not most) breweries have an amber like this in their portfolio, and Esports doesn't do much to differentiate itself from the crowd.
