A strong and spicy ale with a pleasant malt backbone.

Did we fly in Belgian monks to assist with this one? No. Did we dress like monks while it was being brewed? Also no. But we did watch the Jean Claude Van Damme 1995 hit 'Sudden Death' the night before, which is basically the same thing. 30 IBU

473 mL can from the brewery; no canning date and served barely chilled. This is officially the first canned tripel I have ever reviewed.

Pours a hazy golden-yellow colour, with a rough pour producing less than a finger of sudsy white head that quickly fizzles off. A sickly-thin collar is the only survivor, save for some cirrus-like wisps on the surface; not the most visually attractive tripel I've ever come across. Bubble gum, apricot and baked apples on the nose, with banana bread, clove and yeastiness also discernible.

It tastes alright, but lacks the depth and nuance of a real Belgian tripel. I'm getting bubble gum early on, with notes of candi sugar, apricot, ripe plum and bready, wheaty malts not far behind. Maybe a little bit of white grape in there, too, with hints of clove spice and banana on the back end; kinda sugary at the finish, which is relatively boozy & warming. Full-bodied, with low carbonation that limply agitates the surface of the palate; feels smooth and soft on the tongue. Finishing the glass is a bit tiresome; I was ready to move on to something else twenty minutes ago.

Final Grade: 3.41, a B-. I don't think that Ugly on the Inside is Refined Fool's first Belgian tripel, though I am certain that it's the only one I've reviewed. Either way, Belgian styles do not comprise a very significant fraction of their portfolio, and that relative lack of experience would seem to be on full display here. I don't dislike this beer - it's a drinkable malt-forward pale strong ale - but it doesn't hold a candle to any of the Belgian-made abbey and/or trappist equivalents.
