473 mL can from the brewery; no canning date. Served at cellar temperature.
Pours a deep black-brown colour with chestnut highlights, kicking up 1.5 fingers of loose, frothy, khaki-tinged head. Within three minutes it has dissipated entirely, save for a narrow collar of creamy suds; decent lace deposition. Light peanut butter on the nose, though I'm also getting a sweet, fruity note that reminds me of cherry jam. Hints of chocolate syrup, hazelnut and roasted malts.
Ehhh. It tastes ok, but the peanut butter is more of a backseat presence, interspersed with flavours of milk chocolate, caramel, dark fruits and icing sugar. Not a lot of development beyond that - chocolate, dark fruits and peanuts stay strong through the finish before fading into a saccharine aftertaste. Medium in body, with low carbonation that barely interacts with the palate; feels smooth and a bit slick. Finishing one can is not too difficult, but one is plenty, thanks.
Final Grade: 3.56, a B grade. Bobhouse Banger is alright, but I was expecting a bit more peanut butter. The fruity, jam-like note was also a little weird - not exactly out of place, as peanut butter and jam are a natural pairing - but rather, 'weird' in the sense that there's no particular reason for it to be there. They didn't add any berries or jam to this brew, at least as far as I know, but there it is. Maybe this is just an old can? Either way, this is a lot sweeter than I'd prefer from a porter, and it has essentially no bitterness to balance things out - I might give this another shot at some point, but I see no pressing need to revisit this in the immediate future.
