473 mL can from the brewery; no canning date. Served barely chilled.
Pours a clear pale golden-yellow colour, producing two fingers of billowing, foamy white head that slowly recedes over the next five minutes or so. A soapy cap and collar live on, with a new swath of lace left behind after each sip; looks good so far. Muddled, muted aroma of stone fruits, orange and bready malts.
An inoffensive session ale that doesn't have a lot going for it; I'm getting grainy malts and apricot early on, with hints of orange and tropical fruitiness not far behind. Finishes with citrus pith bitterness and an astringency that kind of takes over the aftertaste - I kind of like it. Light in body, with lively carbonation that makes for a surprisingly crisp and refreshing pale ale. Drinkable, but I can see that back end rubbing some folks the wrong way.
Final Grade: 3.48, a B-. We Blew Through Our Crown Budget isn't anything to write home about - calling this an IPA is technically accurate, but at only 5% it clearly tilts toward the 'session' side of the IPA strength spectrum. Correspondingly, its flavours and aromas reflect that tilt, i.e. this is a subdued, fairly forgettable beer without any real strengths. Worth a tick I suppose, but most of the previous brews in this series have been one-offs, and Crown Budget is worthy of the same fate.
