473 mL can from the brewery; no packaging date. Served barely chilled.
Pours a clear pale golden colour with some flocculent sediment swirling around the liquid; it's topped with just under two fingers of bubbly, soapy white head that fades within three minutes. The survivors include a frothy collar and a filmy-thin cap; good lace deposition, too. Muddled, understated aroma of grapefruit, orchard fruit, bread and dank, pithy, slightly piney hops.
Fruity at the forefront, with notes of strawberry, melon, bubble gum and mandarin orange, as well as a hint of grainy malts and honey bread. Indeterminate tropical notes by mid-sip, with grapefruit pithiness and an earthy bitterness at the finish; dank, fruity aftertaste with faint booziness. Medium-full in body, with low carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel; mediocre drinkability.
Final Grade: 3.65, a B grade. Big Boys on the Road is a satisfactory West Coast IPA that didn't make a huge impression on me, good or bad. Truth be told, the Refined Fool back catalogue is packed with so many middling quality IPAs that I'm starting to wonder why exactly I am still going out of my way to purchase & review them. Oh right - the tick. Refined Fool 256 : thehyperduck 2. I sass because I love: keep on keepin' on, Fools.
