Our Coolship Lager Black gains its signature color from the use of European roasted malts. It is brewed using a traditional double decoction mash and hopped with fine European noble hops, After the boil it rests in our copper coolship for 1 hour. It is then transferred over our baudelot cooler into our open tanks for fermentation. After a cool fermentation using a classic Czech lager yeast it is cellared for several months prior to release,

Appearance: Arrives the color of root beer with a one finger khaki head; decent retention and sudsy lacing
Smell: Roasted malt with some coffee, chocolate, and caramel tones
Taste: Toasted brown bread forward with some mocha and a nut taste; grassy and herbal, through the middle, with some coffee and chocolate; some dark fruit in the finish
Moutfeel: Medium bodied with low to moderate carbonation
Overall: An interesting lager with lots of complexity for the ABV

A: appears cola brown and opaque, but when held to the light, it's crystal clear and mahogany; 1 finger finely pored tan head that receded to wispy cap with a thick collar; light lacing;
S: deeply roasted grain, vanilla, and a bit of milk chocolate;
T: follows the nose, but the flavor is muted as compared to the aroma; moderate bitterness on the finish;
M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; dry finish;
O: good, but the flavor was the weak link;

Much left to desire from Coolship Lager Black. Does all things middling at best with brightest points being a rich fairly sweet molasses malt nature. Flavors are quite plain and unevolving. Depth is limited, feel is thin. Hops are terribly muted. This treads very very closely towards AAL waters for a pricey lager 4 pack. Perhaps this is too old, cans are undated. This brewery was talked up to me, this first entrance to their wares is unflattering. I may have overrated this

(16 oz can, no date/code; purchased cold single at Pinocchio's two days ago... poured into a Tubinger mug)
L: dark burgundy-brown liquid, moderately hazy; foam builds to the nearly to the lip of the glass... keeps a thin, broken, messy cap, lacing a little
S: prune, date, dark caramel, brown cake; mild wet dead leaf note, with some outdoorsy earthiness... more of a 'hoppy (doppel)bock' tone as it goes... overall, mostly decocted dark grain and dark dried fruits, with a moderately-bold intensity
T: explosion of complex malt browning flavors, hints of molassesy fruitcake and raisin up front, aftertaste mostly a deeply toasted grain, not quite brown/black-roasty, with a nugget of concentrated dark caramel up in the mid-front of the palate... aside from that caramel note at the back of my front teeth, very little discernible sweetness elsewhere... halfway through, and the hops now seem to pull to the fore with a classic noble rustic resinous character
F: spongy malt nectar for a brief swell, with a brooding, dark cloud of roasty smoke acidifying the palate in the aft beyond... sipper, swiller, chugger, gulper - it's engineered to be all of that... it does get a bit flat by the end, but the burn(t) helps maintain interest
O: my oh my is this terrific... arguably lacks (or is begging for) some depth on the back end / finish... the 'Black' moniker gave me a false impression of this being more Schwarzbier-like, but I was more than happy with what it turned out to be (2408)

Pours opaque red tinged black with a root beer head. Sweet malty aroma. Immediate impression is dark pretzel flavor, sweet malty finish. Tasty and different, medium feel and dry finish. In Walgreens when expectations are high, above 3 gets you a raise.

Poured from a 16 oz an undated can that was purchased at the brewery yesterday to a Nonic at fridge temp.
The body looks like really dark cola or rootbeer with a tinge of red. A tan 1-inch of multi-sized bubbles sits above.
The aroma is sugary malt.
The taste is malty also, but not as sweet as the smell suggests. There is a chocolate note and the finish is ash dry.
The mouthfeel is light, carbonation is appropriate.
Not bad, but not a killer.

Coolship Lager Black pours a dark brown, just about black color, with a medium-sized, long-lasting, and lacing head. The aroma has notes of chocolate and fresh rye bread. The flavor has a nice rye, bread doughy flavor, a hint of smoke, and unsweetened chocolate. Good feel. Overall, it is a fantastic lager with lots of flavors, nothing crazy, and enjoyable.

Look: It pours dark brown with a tan head. Head retention is very good.
Smell: It has roasted aromas with some bread components. There is a fruity background sweetness.
Taste: The flavors have bready and roast blends. The hops have a citrus and pine element to them. There is a bit of sweetness to it.
Feel: It has a medium body with a dry finishg to it.
Overall, it reminds me more of a nicely put together black IPA without the hops being in your face. It's a nice drinking beer with plenty of flavor.

Fun stuff, well crafted and balanced. Some felt it was drying, but I thought well executed to accompany food. A tad of wood barrelling to round it out.

While I totally appreciate the adherence to traditional old brewing methods, this is the 4th different style I've ventured to try from these folks and each has a somewhat off-putting funk to them. Meanwhile their English Dark Mild, which isn't open fermented is banging. Hurts me to give low scores despite authenticity, but I don't love this.

My first review from Brewer which is a winner.
Czech Black Lagers are a sudden rage, and I find something new in black body beers all the time. No exception.
a) Pours stout like black body that laces and lasts with a khaki head. Nice looking.
s) ROAST, coffee, caramel, floral, nutty, bakery.
t) Follows nose gets broader. Toasted dark grain bread, nut bread, hops enter with grass and herbs. Definitely prune and fig.
f) Medium bodied, smooth and velvety feel. Slightly sweet.
o) A lot of flavor for 5.4% ABV - Satisfying.

From a can. Pours a deep opaque brown witt a finger of long lasting light tan foam. Smells of earthiness and roasted barley. The flavor is earthy, medium roasty, with a bit of bread crust, and some earthy hops. Medium- light in body and smooth.

This is an excellent beer. It's about as dark a Czech lager I can honestly say I have consumed. Nonetheless, it is quite possibly the smoothest lager I've ever tasted as well. I highly recommend this for anyone who's looking for a nice Czech style lager with an American flavor to it. It really packs a punch that you'd only expect to experience in the country of Czechia. This is like going to the Czech Republic and having one of the best burger and fries you've ever had.

16oz can into a pint glass. No freshness dating, disappointing since the can proclaims "please drink fresh".
Nice looking beer, black body, deep amber when held up to the light. Tan head persists in good form throughout leaving thick rings of lacing. Aroma of medium roasted malt. Taste is full, earthy roasted malt with a light bitterness. Long lasting finish. Tasty brew, and a hard to find style.
