Fred's (OEC's resident Australian Shepherd) Roggenbier pours dark copper in color with an off white head. The spiceness of 3 different rye malts is balanced by a malty body and just a touch of noble hops.

Smell- Sweet molasses notes and fresh dark bready yeast. 4.25

Taste- dark malt, light brown sugar and some fruity notes. Clean finish and not very bitter. 4.5

Feel- lively carbonation and full-bodied. 4.75

Overall- Even though my experience with this obscure style is limited, upon studying reviews of the styles characteristics, OEC nailed it. Very enjoyable beer.

Appearance: Arrives a clear copper color with a one finger head; a few shards of lacing linger

Smell: Bread and rye underpinning toffee, caramel and herbal, grassy tones

Taste: Bread and spicy rye, up front with the toffee and caramel adding a sweeter element; a touch of banana, in the middle and just a hint of sour and smoke to offset the sweet side

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation

Overall: Interesting example of a style I really haven't had much experience with

A: crystal clear; deep copper in color; 1 finger finely pored light tan head that receded to a moderately tight cap; no lacing;

S: subtle sweet malt and clove with spice from the rye;

T: caramel malt sweetness up front; somewhat yeasty from the middle through the finish; a hint of clove at the end; no rye at all; no bitterness;

M: light to medium bodied; moderate carbonation; dry finish;

O an enjoyable beer, but not at all true to the style;

This one pours a golden dark orange-ish brown color, with a very small, rapidly dissipating head, and not much lacing.

This smells distinctly of pumpernickel bread, toasty, spiced, and with that rye bitterness.

The aroma is a bit more inviting than the palate here. It’s definitely tasty, but feels a tad bit watery on the finish. There’s rye spice, but not quite enough malt richness, based on my expectations.

This is thin, watery, but very crisp and drinkable.

It was interesting to have such a rare style, but it was a little bit boring.

Rogen beer, but very little rye coming through, closer to a soft drink. Maybe it's been around too long though I recently bought it. light mouthfeel but still carbonation there.

Lightly hazed copper/orange with fine sediment in suspension. Two inches of almond head is dense and slow to settle. A brief burst of carbonation stirs the sediment. Patchy lace forms all over the walls of an unbranded mug.

Fresh baked bread comes to mind quickly, perhaps wheat or rye. The malt is nicely caramelized. Spiciness might come from the hops, but probably more likely from the rye. It also has a very light banana aroma.

The flavor is obviously rye with light hops followed by nuts and wheat bread that build with warmth. There is no fruity nature. It has a mild, bitter bite and a long, lingering finish of bread. With warmth the caramel continues to build quite dramatically as it reached room temperature.

The body is medium to full, with a texture similar to Jersey cotton. Alcohol is on target. Carbonation has a light effervescence.

This is an easy drinking after work beer. It goes well with pretzels and casual conversation.

Caramel aroma, bread, sweet fruit, floral hops.
Nice taste. Caramel, banana, toast. Tiny bite of hops.

Had on tap. Opaque brown pour with a light khaki foamy head, thick lacing blobs on the glass. Smell and taste have the rye and toasty earth tones dominate. Nose has a hint a herbal tones on the backend. Taste has a touch of very toasted caramel, maybe burnt caramel. But this style is here for the rye and it is deep, even in the feel with various dry rye textures swirling around.

Alright, it's time to finally tick off one of my last few remaining styles. I've never come across a Roggenbier in the wild before. When I was reminded that OEC recently released this one, I had to make the detour on my way to New Haven yesterday to pick this up. I'm very excited to see what this is all about so let's just dive right in

Pours a cloudy dark copper with a finger of creamy off white head that fades to a ring and leaves minimal lacing

It's actually super unique in the nose, definitely rye forward but there's a lot of fruity notes at play as well. I'm picking up on aromas of red grape, rye toast, sweet caramel, black cherry, clove, overripe banana, floral hops, and black tea

There's more of a spicy rye component to it in taste but it's still damn good. On the front end of the sip I'm tasting rye toast, caraway, brown sugar, raisin, molasses, black tea, floral hops, and black pepper. The swallow brings notes of rye bread, raisin, brown sugar, black tea, caraway, burnt caramel, black pepper, and light herbal hops

A medium body pairs with gentle carbonation, resulting in a slick beer. Finishes neutral and spicy

Why the hell is this style brewed so infrequently? It's a very well balanced and easy drinking beer. I need more
