750 mL swing-top bottle from the brewery; bottled Feb 10 2015 and listed at 4%. Served slightly chilled.
This one pours a clear golden-blonde colour, generating one finger of soapy, bone-white head, which proceeds to dissipate steadily over the next couple of minutes. A bubbly film remains at the surface, in addition to a frothy collar and a modest-sized ring of lace. Looks good to me. As for the aroma, I am picking up a lot of doughy, grainy pale malts on the nose, with touches of honey and rye bread. Mildly floral, and perhaps just a bit spicy.
A tasty, unique little pale ale. I can pick out a mixture of doughy, bready, and biscuity malt flavours, with additional notes of caramelized sugar sweetness and spicy rye grain blending in nicely. Finishes with a pronounced hop bitterness - spicy and herbal, with some grassiness. This bitterness lingers into the aftertaste, along with a touch of rye. Fairly light in body, with lively carbonation that results in a crisp, refreshing mouthfeel. Not particularly complex, but very much a pleasure to sip.
Final Grade: 3.96, a very respectable B+. There are already a number of Ontario brewers putting out some impressive rye-type beers, and Glance ensures that Innocente can be promptly added to that list. If the (handwritten) new abv is accurate, they have brewed up a pretty solid session option, right here. It's assertively hopped, with enough rye flavour to satisfy those looking for that sort of thing - a proven combination that works out well. A good introduction to this brewery's portfolio - can't wait to crack open a few of the other bottles I snagged while stopping by in Waterloo.
