500 mL bottle from the brewery; bottled 02/04/2015 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a clear, ruddy-amber hue, generating one finger's worth of soapy, off-white coloured head. It fades away over the next couple of minutes, gradually being replaced with a bubbly, frothy collar, along with a modest swath of lacing. I am getting a lot of fruit off of the nose - grape, cherry, plum, apple and apricot - an eclectic group for this style, but not at all off-putting. Some boozy caramel sweetness also wafts through, but in a very subtle manner.
Not a bad strong lager at all - but nothing worth writing home about, either. The malts have a rich-tasting, bread pudding feel to them, with caramel and toasted nuts featured fairly prominently, as well. Fruity notes of apple, golden raisin, apricot and red grape skin begin to crop up mid-sip, with the flavour profile settling upon a bittersweet blend of fruit sugars and spicy, floral hop bitterness at the finish. The 6.1% abv straddles the bounds of detectability. Light-medium in body, with moderate carbonation levels that result in a crisp bite, and a smooth, enjoyable feel on the palate.
Final Grade: 3.68, a B grade. I've been drinking far too many hoppy pale ales lately, and Innocente's Uncle Bock was just what the doctor ordered - a well-made, malt-forward, German-style strong lager. This is not one of my favourite styles, but I can appreciate a good maibock when I stumble across one, and I am enjoying this brew even more than I initially thought I might. Its fruity flavour profile, along with its mild, sensibly conservative booziness make it worth serious consideration as an ideal late-spring warmer. I'd pick it up again next year.
