473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Sep 19 2022 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a hazy, translucent golden-yellow colour, topped with one finger of tight, creamy white head that melts off within two minutes or so. A bubbly collar of suds lives on, with little else of interest, i.e. no cap or lace, though there is lace deposition as you sip away. The aroma is fruity and nuanced, with pink grapefruit and tangerine as well as hints of pineapple, passion fruit and mildly piney, floral hops. Kind of sweet too, like a fruit cup.
A tasty little DIPA, but definitely on the lighter side of this style. The flavours are fruit-forward and largely follow the nose - mandarin orange, grapefruit and pineapple, with lesser notes of grainy wheat sweetness and passion fruit. Citrus peel and pithiness towards the finish, with a proper dose of piney, herbal hop bitterness tying things up nicely; lingering suggestions of syrupy fruit cup. The alcohol is discernible as it warms, but just barely. Medium in body, with lively carbonation that remains prickly well into the session; crisp and smooth, good drinkability.
Final Grade: 3.98, a worthwhile B+. Side Launch's Down Under does its overutilized moniker justice, skilfully showcasing its Vic Secret and Eclipse hops, which load this beer up with citrusy, tropical goodness. While I wouldn't say it's one of the best DIPAs in the province, it's a perfectly acceptable one that I wouldn't hesitate to return to in the future - in fact, I'll be keeping an eye out for a fresh flat. Totally worth a try if you spot it.
