Our Festbier is a fuller bodied, moderately hopped seasonal lager. It has a wonderful dark amber colour, great mouthfeel and lots of flavour. This type of beer, typically brewed for the Oktoberfest season, truly represents the Bavarian way of celebrating.

473 mL can from the LCBO, included in a Side Launch gift pack with a big ol' dimpled mug. Dated Sep 19 2023 and served barely chilled.
Pours clear and effervescent, its orange copper-hued body capped with an inch of lumpy, foamy, off white-coloured head that falls off steadily. A little under five minutes later, it has dropped down to a frothy, sudsy collar and cap - not a lot of lace production, but it still looks good. Caramelized malts, bread and nuttiness on the nose, with hints of toasted grains, muffins and noble hops.
It's quite malt-forward, even for a festbier - I'm getting flavours of whole grain bread, toasted grains and biscuits, as well as caramelized sugars. Some light nuttiness on the back end, with faint suggestions of citrus peel and tea leafy, herbal hops; biscuits and toasted malts continue briefly into a sweet-ish aftertaste. Medium in body, with moderately low carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel; modestly quaffable, but not at all refreshing and not something I'd want to drink multiples of.
Final Grade: 3.62, a B grade. Side Launch's Festbier isn't one of the better oktoberfestbiers I've had this autumn. That's not to say it's a crummy lager or anything, but it's a little lacking in both balance and depth, resulting in a brew that - while inoffensive - is not an especially great example of its purported style. I wouldn't discourage others from trying this, but if they release it as a single next year, it'll most likely be a one and done for this beer geek.
