473 mL can from the LCBO, included in a Side Launch gift pack; dated Aug 27 2025 and served barely chilled.
Pours a deep, mostly-clear ruby red colour, with a fair bit of sediment clouding up its complexion. Situated atop is an inch of frothy, pale beige-tinted head that collapses within a couple of minutes, leaving behind a tight collar and a filmy cap. Generous lace deposition; looks fine so far. Neat aroma - I'm getting earthy, woodsy hops, caramelized sugars, rye bread, spice and a touch of strawberry.
A solid red ale that quickly grew on me: malt forward early on, with bread crusts, caramel, and spicy rye sweetness, accented by hints of citrus peel and berries. Earthy, floral, woodsy hop bitterness comes through late in the sip, lingering alongside spicy rye bread into a bittersweet aftertaste. Medium in body, with moderate carbonation that gently agitates the surface of the palate. An easy-drinking, well-balanced red ale with superb drinkability.
Final Grade: 3.94, a B+. Side Launch's Red Ale kept me interested for the entire glass, which is more than I can say for many examples of this style. The red rye imparts a robust, distinctive maltiness to the flavour profile, as well as a spicy note that pairs well with the old school Cascade hop profile - a thoughtful and effective combination which makes for a thoroughly enjoyable red ale. I would love to try this fresh, so I'll cross my fingers and hope that Side Launch sees fit to make this an annual autumn seasonal.
