A - Appearance pours out largely opaque, black with red and brown highlights, a light tan head that lingers, and some thin line lacing.

S - Strong hit of alcohol, sweet caramel and maple, and a doughy malt note.

T - Follows the nose, with a front of bread and caramel, exploding into maple and molasses, with bright acidity and sweetness that lingers with a bit of earthy spiciness in the finish.

M - Moderate weight, mild carbonation, lingering alcohol prickliness that trails off in the finish. The finish is critical in making this whole thing work, in that it closes down the very heavy sweetness that could become cloying without it.

O - The beer is interesting and quite tasty, and walks a line between sweetness and boozy sharpness. That it succeeds to deliver a drinkable Brown in the end is a tribute to the skill of the brewers. That said, this high wire act wobbles a bit, and comes dangerously close to being overpoweringly sweet, and the booze is a bit large overall. I enjoy, but this is a one and done, for certain.

16 oz can, bought fresh just before Christmas 2021 so no longer retired, poured into a nucleated teku at ~40 degrees F.

L: Pours a deep, dark, opaque hickory brown, and forms 3+ fingers of just barely off-white head with great retention.

S: Pure maple and brown sugar wells out of the glass. It's not unlike the smell at the candy counter in a Canadian tourist trap shop.

T: So, start by thinning out some maple syrup (real stuff, not colored corn syrup masquerading like it) so it's easily drinkable. Stir in some dark brown sugar. Add just a smidge of crushed hazelnut and maybe a dab of crushed pecan. Have some glazed doughnut crumbs handy to swirl in. Bake at 350 for - I kid, just sip it. It'll be a fair recreation of this beer.

F: While not quite as tooth-clingy and throat-sealing as actual maple syrup, not terribly far off - full bodied and sticky.

O: This is a lovely drinking experience, but I am the diametric opposite of a hophead and love sweet beers. If the thought of a dessert brown with virtually no discernible hop character whatsoever turns you off, this ain't your beer.

1 Pint, 6 fl. oz. bottle
Served in a becker glass
2015

This beer pours very dark brown and is topped with a couple of inches of tan head that leaves virtually no lacing.

The smell is great. I has everything from the regular Chickow! plus maple aroma. I was surprised that the maple was still present after three years in the bottle. The hazelnut is as intense as always.

The taste is every bit as good as the smell. Hazelnut is complimented by the maple, which again, I am surprised that it is so pronounced after three years.

Medium to full mouthfeel with smooth, velvety mouthfeel

This is a fantastic variant of a fantastic beer. Well done.

Overall, I really like the entire line of Chickow beers. This one is on the sweeter side, wonderful dark coloring, very sweet maple aroma. The tastes sets up perfect for an after-dinner drink. Just fantastic!

This is a fantastic beer.
It has the finest nutty aroma I've experienced in a beer. The flavor is also great but not quite as wonderful as the aroma.
A bit sweet, especially at the start, but this works really well given the other flavor components and given some bittering entering at the finish.

O: notably better than the very good Chickow! Excellent after dinner ale.
