Had this at the RL in Flint. Poured a dark brown almost black color into a pint glass. Head faded quick but left a thin layer plus some good lacing. Some bitterness but in a good way with chocolate and roasted malt flavors. All in all not a bad Porter if you run across it someplace.

One of RL's mainstays, this brown porter is significantly fuller than a typical brown ale (like Newcastle) and is better than the best brown ales and porters in the state from Bell's, Dark Horse, Founders and Dragonmead and far ahead of MBC, Kuhnhenn, Harper's and others. In my judgment, only New Holland's Cabin Fever is its equal. Excellent mouthfeel, taste, and finish.

It is somewhat lighter than RL's excellent milk stout but has a slight smoky aftertaste that is understated but delicious, leading naturally to a second glass. The RL offerings from the brown porter down toward the stronger-darker end are excellent, the lighter beers being somewhat nondescript in my opinion. Highly recommended.

Pours a dark brown-blackish colored body, with a frothy off-white colored head. Has a very chocolaty, roasted aroma, some malts are present too. Has an okay coffee taste, but there is some alcohol taste as well.

Sample at the brewpub: Pours a dark brown color that allows very little light to penetrate. Thin beige head that has good retention, and a top ring of lacing and below that a scene like Missile Command. Sweet malty aroma with hints of coffee. Medium-bodied with a nice roasted malt and coffee flavor. The finish is dry and roasty with a flavorful hops aftertaste. Pretty enjoyable.

Appearance: Beer pours dark brown almost black with a slight off white head. Minimal lacing
Aroma: Aroma is of toasted malt, slight coffee, slight butter. Found it to be rather weak in aroma even as it warmed.
Taste: Taste was of watery coffee. It lacked very little body and didn't offer much beyond some slight bitterness and a slight toasty biscuity flavor
Mouthfeel: This beer came and went before I could really identify any interesting qualities. I think this is a very light brown porter without any siginificant body to balance it.

It was very drinkable although I didn't enjoy it very much due to its lack of body.

Deep ruby brown color, looks black in dim light. Thin off-white head that quickly disappears. Lots of chocolate mixed with roasted grain in the nose, along with some coffee. Flavor begins with roasted grain and moves into generous amounts of chocolate and coffee. A hint of charcoal with some intriguing smokiness. Finish is roasted and dry. Aftertaste doesn't hang around quite as long as I would like it to. I really like the way the smokey flavors balance out the chocolate. Mouthfeel is a little thin for a beer this full flavored. Still, the drinkability is unhampered by anything and it goes down easy and leaves you wanting more. Good thing I got a growler of this one.

Served on premises. I found a good dark and toasty nose here, with a noticeable trace of bitter chocolate flavor. A thin head per style, which leaves a bit of lacing. Coffee notes come through while you work your way down the glass, then you're left with a good dry finish.
