After the excellent REM, I’ve had a couple disappointed brews from this stout series - I’m hoping the Old Scout Rye breaks this dispiriting streak. 750ML screen printer, orange waxed bottle.
Bottle opens with no hiss at - but the black beer is still surprisingly carbonated (& I hope some chemist can explain that to me). I’m not sure if it’s the crumbly, crappy wax or operator error, but several tiny chunks end up in the glasses. Dammit. Barely more aroma than the others: roast, sweetness are faint, & I think I catch a whiff of barrel. I think.
Night Falls - Old Scout easily hops the low bar set by the Heaven Hill version. First, it has some carbonation, which always helps a beer out, amiright? Plus, there’s some serious barrel: the rye is spicy, boozy, dominant. Wood, roast form a platform like I might build (shaky) under the rye. Little to no body. Drinks like a light version of a rye whiskey, & it’s starting to warm the back of my throat & my underbelly with the alcohol.
The base beer…wait, there’s beer in here? I doubt it. Whatever it is, it wasn’t strong enough to withstand the onslaught of this barrel. All barrel, all the way through, but hey, a little poker of rye whiskey never made me unhappy. Pretty good brew.

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
