Bought two 16 ounce cans from Beer Drop. I enjoyed the first one enough to keep the second, probably for Spring or Summer. A decent Helles that sticks close to style.
Guten Prank #1 Looks the part of a blonde, although a starlet would have more foam and lace. Smells are tamer, mostly malt. Tastes are balanced, the hops enter in at mid-palate and stay nicely through the finish. Refreshing and cleansing in my mouth. I had Gluten along with a lunch of leftovers and it all made good enough.
As for my micro-review of Four Fathers.... Another Mom 'n Pop shop in a college town that started as a home brewer. After nine years as a micro, they haven't made a big brewery; but they probably made the community gathering spot they wanted. They take their craft seriously and venture into all brewing traditions, even Belgium. And that is work enough. I like their references to being in the Chicago traveling orbit. Valpo reminds me more of southwest Michigan than it does of Indiana. Cheers !
4/12/23 On the first day of real Spring (climatic), I drank the second can from Beer Drop and had it with a medley of BBQ sauces: Sweet Baby Rays which is a Chicago favorite and commercial success, I contend, because it doesn't take sides in the regional/parochial BBQ wars ; a KC sweet tomato sauce which is close to Rays in spirit; and a smoky Memphis sauce that crosses the line for pepper... and never comes back. Guten Prank #1 paired well with the sweet sauces and wouldn't want to pair well with the Memphis exaggeration.
