Good head production and decent retention and lacing. Foam is dark brown; body is an inviting dark brown, nearly black.
Hugely sweet nose, with an emphasis on maple syrup. Just a hint of cinnamon, some butter, dough, and a light hint of booze. Aroma is remarkably on point for French toast; it smells like cold French toast in a glass.
Less immediately pastry-like on the palate; at first, it's almost a straight forward stout, not unlike a smoother, larger, less roasty Guinness. Coffee, dark chocolate, mild roast, and hints of dark fruit and grapes. On the second half, however, those sweeter tones emerge, in particular maple syrup. Dough, eggs, butter. Kiss of cinnamon on the finish. Maintains a mild-to-moderate roastiness throughout. Not as sweet as the nose suggests.
Smooth and lively on the palate. Not particularly big bodied. Despite the implied sweetness, it maintains a certain dryness.
The flavor can't live up to the incredible promise of the nose, but that's almost a good thing, as it comes across as less gimmicky, and more stout-like. I can't tell if that's intentional, or if they missed the mark on a flavored stout. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they intentionally went for a traditional stout with some added flavor, instead of an over the top flavored stout, and with that in mind, this is quite good.
