22 oz
No Date (fairly certain 2015)
?$

Deep brown to black in appearance with no head and minimal legs.

Nose is candied sugar, licorice/anise, minor dark fruit, and a bit of booze.

Taste is similar to the nose with sweetness, bourbon, oak, licorice, minor dark fruit - fig/raisin, booze, minor hops, and minor black coffee.

Mouthful is medium to heavy and strong. Carbonation is average. Finish is is semi dry and warming.

Boozy and sippable. Tastes more like a BA RIS with those hops. The licorice is nice as is the sweetness. As it warms, the oak comes out very strongly along with the bourbon character. The extra age on this probably evened this out.

Served from a 22 oz. bottle into my favorite DFH "Perfect Glass."

Beer pours a pitch black with a moderate-sized, dark tan head that settles to a trace color. Aroma of sweet malts, coconut, chocolate, and some noticeable alcohol. Sweetness all the way. Despite a long time in bourbon barrels, the expected oak and vanilla are restrained, if noticeable. Taste is sweet, with a balance of chocolate and licorice notes. Oaky bourbon notes are much more noticeable here and counterbalance a very sweet stout. While a bit boozy, it's still quite drinkable for 13% ABV. Mouthfeel is oily and with slight carbonation befitting such a huge beer. All in all, an excellent beer.

32oz counter pressure filled growler from Barrel and Barley (Woodstock, GA). Served in a Barrel and Barley teku.

Pours pitch black with three fingers of dark khaki head. The foam doesn't linger very long before shrinking to a thick collar. Very little lacing.

Aromas of heavily roasted malts, chocolate, dark fruit and some faint yeast esters. Opens up and seems richer as it warms but still the same basic nose.

Huge booze note initially in the taste with bittersweet bakers cocoa, dark fruit skins, burnt caramel, licorice, charred malt and molasses. As it warms (and even moreso when I return to finish the growler a couple nights later) that heavy handed booze settles considerably. A bruisingly big imperial stout with dominant notes of heavily roasted malts and dark fruit skins.

Full, chewy feel with moderate carbonation. The finish is lingering and surprisingly bitter with dark cocoa, licorice, smoke and molasses.

At first pour I wasn't so sure of 12th Labor's merits but when I came back a few days later to finish the growler it really clicked for me. It's good to see such a solid big stout from a brewery that is making more waves for its sours and wild ales. A tasty quaff in its own right that I think would really shine if given the proper barrel treatment.

Second growler, first one paired excellently with a cigar. This one is for tasting.

Appearance: Blot out the sun black with a small caramel colored head.

Aroma: Deep notes of licorice, Belgian yeast esters, and roast.

Flavor: Touch of soy sauce esque specialty malt astringency. Dark chocolate. Booze. Hints of dark fruit.

Mouthfeel: Rich, full bodied and velvety with warming booze.

Barrel aging will definitely take this one to a whole other plane of intensity. Can't wait to try that.
