12oz. Bottle

Pours a nice clean/clear golden pale yellow color, nice carbonation, with a small creamy off-white head, which leaves some sticky lacing behind. The nose is slightly hoppy, some malt notes. The taste is slightly hoppy, a slight malt note. Medium body, the finish is bitter. Overall not bad, but would not buy again. I would take a Squatters Full Suspension Pale Ale at 4% ABV over this brew any day in the week. Again, why even make these session IPAs?

The general stigma attached to Sam Adams is showing in the reviews (as usual)

I think this does exactly what is says on the tin. It is what it is -- a very light IPA.
The classic IPA hop flavors are there and they're very tasty.

I actually like this style because I find I can appreciate the hops more when a beer is thinner and less maltier.

I think there should be studies conducted with BA enthusiasts. Give them new Sam Adams beers with Sierra Nevada labels on them and see how they review.

Huzzaaah!

I love the Rebel family and am a huge fan of the robust Rebel Rouser. It has taken me a while to finally come around to trying the Session IPA by Sam Adams. I think that the term Session IPA is a bit of an oxymoron, but hey, at least I can check this one off my list.

Look-It pours a mildly cloudy, but sort of clear golden yellow with a thin head and foamy lacing.

Smell-I smell piney hops and subtle aromas that you might expect from a West Coast style IPA. This one is sort of like the cube root of an IPA, but is worth the time.

Taste-The taste is pretty standard with the typical mango, piney floral hops, but not very intense. I sort of have to take a big gulp to pick up on those flavors. It is pleasant, but subtle. The alcohol is almost imperceptible, because it comes in at a meager 4.5% ABV, again it is a session after all.

Mouthfeel-It has a medium tickle from the carbonation and a smooth syrupiness to it, but not too sweet. The alcohol plays with the carbonation in a fanciful way.

Overall-I’d say that it is a refreshing beer for certain days in the summer when the sun is relentless and you want to cool down without getting a headache or getting drunk. It isn’t impressive, but it is nice.

I really like the biscuit like malt profile on this beer. Just when I think it might get sweet, it comes through with a crisp finish. Citrusy hops are prominent but not obtrusive. They seem to be some fairly routine American citrus hops. At 4.5%, it is pushing the boundaries of a true session beer, but you can probably drink a couple of them without getting too tipsy. While this beer may be derivative of other session IPAs, Boston Beer proves to me that they can keep pace. If you are looking for the next new thing, this isn't it, but if you just want to enjoy a good balanced IPA, give it a shot.

A: Poured from the bottle into a Piraat tulip/snifter-type glass. Body is slightly cloudy dark yellow/golden with a half-finer whitish head on top.

S: Surprisingly grainy, with lemony citrus on top of that.

T: First impression: this is oddly devoid of flavor. There is almost no flavor on the front of the tongue. It's quite interesting, actually - as in, "how do you brew a beer to taste like just about nothing?" There's a faint taste of husky grain near the back of the palate, then a hint of lingering lemony bitterness, which does linger ever-so-modestly in the aftertaste - a word I hesitate to use, as the "taste" part of the compound word is really an exaggeration. Honestly, it reminds me more of a light pilsner given the grainy, lemony flavors than an IPA (even a Session IPA), though I do get a slight sense of fruity ale yeast underneath it.

M: Heft is light and there's a modest creaminess to the feel.

O: On the bright side, I don't get any off-flavors at all; it's clean and so light, flavor-wise, that it's easy to drink. That's worth something for a Session IPA, I suppose.

Best before Sept '15 on the label. Pours a very yellow color with a decent head. The aroma is basically not there any more, smells like tepid water. The taste is very gentle, some cracker sweet malts and a light hop note on the back end, some weird grain bill coming through like a typical sam adams. I had Rebel about 2 months ago so I was expecting a lighter version of that. Wasn't expecting this wimpy beer.

Standard yellow color nothing spectacular.
The smell was a bit off for me, hoppy but something I couldn't quite place
The taste was decent, light, a bit of hops, a bit dry
The feel is crisp but a bit thin
In short, not bad. I would grab one at a picnic, but wouldn't by a six. I'll stick with the Founder's All Day IPA

Delicious hoppy goodness. Tastes like it has a higher ABV than it does. I approve.

12oz brown bottle with a freshness date, sample from the brewery.

L: Mildly hazed golden straw hue, excellent lacing.

S: Fresh citrus zest, cracker-like maltiness, smells a little thin but certainly like an IPA.

T: Herbal, heavy citrus, peppercorn, & pine from the hop flavor and bitterness. Barely enough malt for balance here, would have like to a see a bit more body. Light on the alcohol obviously.

F: Very crisp with a lighter body, dry and a bit thin.

More than enough hop character to be an IPA, the malt has been sacrificed to ensure it is a "session beer" ... perhaps a bit more than it should have but this one is still beerish.

Clear yellow colored beer with a medium sized white colored head that doesn't last.

Smells hoppy with with a strong scent of willow tree so it smells a bit like cat pee. Scents of grapefruit and pine wood.

Starts out tasting of pine board. Quite dry this tastes like pine wood with a little cedar chest added in.

Mouthfeel is OK.

Overall a very average IPA. I can get better even in Utah.

12 oz. bottle, with the label notched at best by June 2015. Picked up a six pack of this stuff from the local beer store; the Samuel Adams take on a 'session IPA'.

Poured into a Lagunitas mason jar.

A - It pours a murky, light golden body with some orange hues and two thick fluffy fingers of foamy white head. Looks pretty nice for what it is, in all honesty.

S - The aroma comes off extremely faint and muted. Mild notes of yeast, and the bready honeyed malts. Faint vegetal hopping, but no real citrus jumps out at me. Bubblegum?

T - The taste follows the nose - very light on the citrus / hops, with just a mild bit of resiny pine noticeable on the end. Otherwise, I'm not pulling out much grapefruit or anything. Yeast. Bready / honeyed malts. Again, bubblegum?

M - The feel is crisp & clean. Easy-drinking, with moderate carb; slightly bloating. Very easy-drinking though, considering the low 4.50% abv.

Overall, I'm not particularly digging this one, it comes off as an even more tuned-down 'session IPA', which is becoming a style I'm not so fond of to begin with. There have only been a couple of breweries who I thought did the style well so far, and this effort from Sam Adams isn't one. Easy drinking, but if I want a 'session IPA' nowadays there are better choices.
