"Best by October 2015"; drank 9/19/15 @ the Yarchives (phew!).
Brown appearance.
A rough pour yielded a HUGE tan head (careful pouring!); a curtain of lace.
Banana, candle wax, raspberry & fresh earth notes in the nose.
Medium thick mouthfeel.
Raspberry, milk chocolate & fresh earth flavors; faint bakers chocolate notes on the finish.
Drinkable & VERY flavorful; a strong example of the style.

Pours a black color. 1/3 inch head of a tan color. Good retention and good lacing. Smells of alcohol, sweet malt, slight roasted malt, hint of hop, and a hint of yeast. Fits the style of an American Porter. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of strong sweet malt, roasted malt, alcohol, hops, and slight yeast. Overall, strong body, good blend, good appearance, lacking in complexity, but still a good porter.

Dark, dark brew with a beige foam in the Troubadour tulip. Quite sudsy in the mouth. Flavors of dark caramel, burnt sugar, and a milk chocolate finish. Hop flavors seem to be absent, but a modest bitter tang finishes it. Deep cocoa nose with some tangy apple cider.
I don't know why the first bottle of this I had the other day tasted so unpleasant. It seemed to taste old and musty. But reviewing from this bottle, it's actually, um, robust seems to be the word I was looking for. Quite drinkable and so full of dark flavors without that bitter sourness of too much Black Patent malt. From the 12 oz bottle purchased at Susan's Fine Wine & Spirits in Santa Fe.

Served in a Trooper shaker pint glass.
Nothing like breaking the monotony of cat-sitting like a bottle o' beer and "Gappa the Triphibian Monster" playing on your buddy's ludicrously large TV. This stuff pours a bleak black-brown topped by a touch more than a finger of dark sandstone foam. The nose comprises thick molasses, mild cocoa powder, a hint of hickory, and plenty of roast. There's a bit of chocolate-covered orange peel tucked away in the back, as well, keeping my on my toes. The taste brings in more of the same, the chocolate taking on a more syrup-style form than before, and the orange coming through near the finish, along with some mild char and pine needles, providing some balance to the proceedings. The body is on the heftier side of medium, with a rather light moderate carbonation and a rich, smooth feel. Overall, a decidedly enjoyable porter, one I kinda wish Sam Adams would offer regularly. It's thicker and bolder than most porters I've had recently, something I hope becomes a trend.

Pours a dark black, bordering on dark roast coffee. Tan brown head forms and leaves plenty of lacing on the glass. Looks like what is expected from the porter or stout style.
The aroma is deeply roasted, with some coffee and dark chocolate hints and a slight whiff of ale yeast fruitiness. Char and smoke whisper into this conversation as well.
Tasting the beer reveals a good balance between roasted malts, herbal hops, slight non descript fruit, and alcohol hint. Very solid rendition of a porter (stout porter aka robust). Has a slight lighter feel and appropriate water treatment to go down soft and smooth. Bitterness and roast balance the beer out and finishes a little on the bitter edge. Really quite a fine dark ale.
Full bodied, lush and creamy on the palate. Leaves a satisfying roasted flavor that lingers on.
Overall, color me impressed on this beer. A very solid robust porter that would stand up to a nice stogie on a crisp fall night. Wish I had a few more of these in my opinion its the winner of the 2015 bunch.

Limited brew from the Sam Adams crew.
A : Mocha brown body, fully opaque, with a khaki colored head that, maybe due to the glassware (a straight walled glass, not a pilsner glass of any kind) is taking up over half of the glass even after a couple minutes. It leaves lacing where it was looking like a nice vanilla froth.
S : A potent mix of dark roast coffee beans and wet hop. Some wet cardboard, burnt toast and rotten garbage can also be smelled. This permeates the whole nose and throws this category off kilter completely. A slight pinch of dank cocoa is also in there. Smells like chocolate vomit. The smells are there but overall it's just...off. I'm hesitant to take a sip.
T : It's bold and burnt and has flavors of rotted meat and chocolate syrup. It's simply nasty. The best way I can describe it is like a liquid version of a roasted plum covered in chocolate and rolled in coffee grounds. Except the plum in the middle has long expired and started to sog and is full of crawling bugs. Undrinkable. Acidic. Rotten. Spoiled meat. The taste embodies the onomatopoeia of "eww" and tastes like vomited chocolate. A drain pour.
F : Watery, but maintains a threshold of light-to-medium thickness, and slightly dusty on the finish.
O : Bad homebrew beer. It actually turned me off of beer drinking for the night and made me feel sickly. I'd drink any watered down side-brand macro lager swill before I'd pick this again. I'm dumping this one down the drain.
