Samuel Adams Berliner Weisse

Reviewing this beer from memory. My thirty first brew reviewed from these guys. Like most beers from Boston Beer Company, also known as Sam Adams, this is just ok.

Bright, yellow color. Medium-sized, white head. Wheat malt, hint of lemon and some other fruits in aroma. Refreshing taste with subtle tartness. Average.

12 oz. bottle.

AROMA: Sweet lemon with a hint of floral.

APPEARANCE: Light gold and slightly hazy. Head is white, frothy, and dissipates slowly.

TASTE: Lightly sour with a subtle flavor of lemon juice.

PALATE: Light bodied with a thin texture. Soft carbonation with a finish that is more of the same (subtle lemon juice flavor).

OVERALL: The aroma is quite compelling. The taste, not so much.

 

 

 

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but is a great summer time brew. A little sweet with a touch of sour. Nothing too over powering. I would have this any day over a shandy or lemon brew.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The recent changes in alcohol laws here in PA have meant drastic differences in the way beer is made available to the public. Now, even a simple trip to the grocery store involves a trip into the Café section to look at/for singles. I found this one during a visit to one of the local Giant Food Stores!

From the bottle: "Refreshing & Effervescent".

I Pop!ped the cap & really let go with an aggro pour since as a wheat beer as its base, cloudiness was not out of the question. It shot up with a massive two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, bone-white head with moderate retention. Color was a cloudy Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 -5). Nose had a tart lemony quality, not as biting as some examples of the style that I have had in the past. Mouthfeel was a bit light, not exactly watery, but not much beyond it, either. The taste had a light, lemony tartness, but again, I have had MUCH more tart examples in the past. The reason for raspberry and/or woodruff syrup is to cut the tartness for the beginners who are supposed to eventually wean themselves off of such stuff. This would not require any syrup, even for the most basic initiate. Finish was dry and refreshing, but it just was kind of a weak example of the style.

 

 

 

This was another beer in this year's American Summer Pack and as one would expect, this was a typical summer beer that went down without a lot of heft or thought behind it. It was smooth and easy while having hardly any noticeable alcohol to speak of and during these waning days of the season, there wasn't much else that I could ask for!

Nice, golden pour to this with enough head to offset the lightness of the liquid. Not much lacing was left behind but I doubt that Weissbiers are known for their soapy residue on glasses. Lots of tartness, lemon, and malt in the nose - which wavered between cracker and pilsener. Some white grape, raspberry juice, floral spice, and wheat came through in the taste but overall, nothing was too strong of overpowering. This was a balanced take on the style that had a bit more body that I would have liked but was lively enough on the palate that nothing lingered for too long.

Of course, this was a session beer which meant that it was easy to move onto my next brew once I finished this off. While not a perfect take on the style, beers like this are almost impossible *not* to like and kick back with. The popcorn-like aroma that lingered in my glass at the end of this was a reminder that some beers are just meant to savor and smile to, which was the case here! Having a December notch, this was nice and well-rounded addition to this year's pack...

7/29...pours hazy opaque gold, darker tints, some residual white foam. Soft citrus small, but very faint. Tart/bitter belnd open. Like a lemony hop. Crisp and rolls away. Edgier than a typical Berliner.
