SA Vienna Style Lager. It had a pleasing amber/gold color topped with a light coffee-colored head. There were some bits of lace. The aroma was floral with sweet caramel factored in. This was a mellow beer, not too hoppy and not overly malty. It had a decent bite with a bit of caramel. This was pleasant, drinkable session beer.

Poured a nice deep copper color with medium head that was gone right away, smell was slightly spicey and caramelly sweet.Taste was nice and malty sweet with caramel tones, there was some dryness in there as well to keep it from being overly sweet. One of my favorite styles this one is a hit with me,very drinkable as well for the style.Good job on this one BBC.

Presentaion: 12oz brown bottle with freshness date. At the time of this review, this is a limited edition beer, available in the holiday 12paks only.

Appearance: Pours a semi-hazy copper beer with a slightly off-white, tight, creamy, foam head that settles to a sticky, somewhat retaining lace.

Smell: Soft aromas of grain, light toasted malts, herbal hops and some ripe dark fruits in the background.

Taste: Smooth mouthfeel, with a thick-ish creamy base. Quite malty in character with a heavy handed dose of toasted malt flavour and a layer of raw sugary sweetness. Brief robust twang in the center, hint of lemon-rind. Hops are light on the bitterness overall, but provide a rounding herbal tea-like flavour with a leafy coarse feel on the palate. More toasted flavours follow with bready grain notes and a soft, fruity, grape, gum-like character. Finish is pretty clean and wet with lingering malt and hop flavours.

Notes: A solid offering from the Boston Beer Co., and I wouldn't be surprised if it's available by the 6pak in 2003.

Presentation: 12 oz brown long neck bottle with a purchase before freshness date on the side of the label.

Appearance: Bubbly off white lace has some stickage, brilliant tawny brassy hue.

Smell: Faint floral and herbal hop aroma with a softly textured toasted malt in the back that pulls a sweetness to the front.

Taste: Clean with a lively crispness and smooth mouth feel in the back. Fresh yet light noble hoppy flavour, bitterness is sufficient and does not get out of control … it seems to offer more flavour than bitterness. A dollop of malt sweetness upfront, maltiness is rounded with a thick toasted flavour. Finishes somewhat clean with a lingering herbal hop and lightly toasted grain in the end.

Notes: I’m very fond of this style, hard to find good ones … hell it’s hard to find them at all. If they put this one in six packs and cases I’ll gladly buy it again. Great to pair this one up with some mild cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese on pretty much any kind of sandwich … cut to the chase, it’s a great lunch time brew.

Poured a rich amber color with a rapidly-fading tan head. Fresh aroma, with a mixture of toasted malt and some "sweetness". Very malty flavor that is balanced nicely by a touch of hoppy character. A nice, creamy mouthfeel. Finishes clean and leaves you ready for another drink.

Another solid offering from the Boston Beer Comany. I would like to see this offered as a stand-alone product (only available in the winter sampler).

Clear amber with fuzzy head that lasts but not much lace. Appealing musty aroma with solid malt backbone. Malts are the name of the game here, namely Vienna malts which makes this a very Oktoberfest-like beer but without the spicy hops. In fact there is not any hop bitterness or spiciness here at all, rather just a dryness towards the end. Malts are sweet and sturdy, the beer is thin and watery but this is more refreshing than it sounds. There is enough flavor here that the thinness is not a drawback. Also it requires no effort at all to drink. This style of beer is hard to come by, but Vienna malt is one of the few beer ingredients that pairs well with tomatoes, and the breadiness of the malts here should reinforce any good dough, and the watery character should wash down any sticky or fatty cheese that lingers in the mouth or on the palate --- so in other words this is a perfect pizza beer.

Another dark amber colored offering, clear, with a yellow head that settles after 40 seconds. Smells of toast and shortbread. Light bready and toasty flavors, a little breezy caramel candy, and a pretty well-balanced hop sense that leans toward the Noble hop end. Finishes somewhat diminished with a glazed doughnut sweetness. Pleasant beer here, drinkable. Vienna Lagers are tough to rate, they are pretty subtle, but this one meets style well. There's just a lot of bigger beers out there, and there are already a lot of local micro "sessionals" on my list.

This beer marks the end of my Sammy excursion, three beers I liked OK, one (Winter Lager) I would probably purchase again...

This pours with a light cream colored head that settles slowly over clear, attractively inviting bright reddish-golden liquid. Nose is toasty malts with some underlying sweetness...hops, where art thou? The taste starts off with a ever so slight spicy/tart note thats followed by bready toasted malt flavors that mingle with a hoppiness that compliments, not overwhelms the delicate malt taste. Finishes a little bit dry and very crisp...all in all, a very nice take on the Vienna Lager style.

Vienna Style Lager from Sam Adams: Great looking beer: deep amber, with an off-white head that is thick, dense and long lasting, with nice lace. The aroma is simply Munich during O-Fest. Very tasty beer, clearly dominated but what is obviously Vienna malts, with substantially less hops than one usually finds with Sammy products. Has a very nice finish. Hope to see this in sixes soon.

The nose on Sam Adams Vienna Style is soft, sweet malt with hints of floral and caramel… very inviting. The malt flavor isn’t too toasty, more bready than anything, overall it is soft and sweet. The hops do add enough flavor, no real bitterness, but some good floral action. This beer satisfies the ol’ tastebuds… finishes dry but with some residual, lingering flavors on your tongue. The color is a darkish amber/copper with an off-white, creamy head, minimal lace. This beer should be available all year.

12oz. brown glass bottle from Winter Classics Pack. Reddish dark copper in color. Ivory colored creamy head which maintains a thin layer throughout the beer. Aroma is grainy, roasted malts and burnt caramel. Roasted malts with toffee notes dominate the flavor, but hops are sufficient to balance the sweetness and allow the beer to finish well. Adequate body and good drinkability. Another solid, but unexceptional Sam Adams. A good Vienna Lager, but IMO no where near the beer that the Great Lakes Elliot Ness is.

Beer is a nice amber color. Pours with a decent head that lingers longer than most. Beer has a nice malty smell with hints of sweetness.

The taste is quite good with a nice balance of malt, caramel, and a bit of spice. Beer finishes clean with no aftertaste except a faint bitter taste in the back of the mouth.

Nothing really stands out too much and nothing is too overpowering. A good beer that is enjoyable and very drinkable. Unfortunately I have only seen it in the winter 12-pack sampler.

From the Sam Adams Winter Sampler Pack.
Pours a ruby red with a thin white head that clings eloquently in patches. Initial smell is of roasted malts and that's it. Initial taste of malts, followed by a touch of caramel. The hops are noted as well towards the end, and it finishes with a syrupy taste. Another fine quality product from the Sam Adams lineup.

This beer had a large sized ivory head that contained fine-small bubbles. The body was cloudy and carbonation was observed. The hue was copper and the nose was malty. The flavor was malty and the mouthfeel was very smooth, delicate, easy on the palate, somewhat thin, and light bodied. This beer left a good lacing appearance. This was a beer that was very enjoyable to not only drink, but to rate as well.

This beer pours a clear medium dark brownish copper with a large clingy tan head with lace. The smell is of spicy hops with an underlying sweet malt. The taste has an almost perfumey front with a mild sweet malty middle and a spicy hoppy finish. This is a rather enjoyable crisp malty lager that is more good than great.

Probably Sam Adams' best. Really enjoyed this one for it's color, and taste.
Dark brown with a decent foam.

It has a deep, semi-sweet flavor - just like a dark should have. Heavy on the malty flavors and smells. There is a touch of brown sugar/molasses deep in the flavor, just enough to enjoy withou competing with the malt.
It has a bitter finish, but no lingering aftertaste.

Very nice, try this alone or in the Winter Sampler.

As mass produced vienna lagers go, this was acceptable. The Hammer and Nail is vastly superior, but that makes sense, as it is more of a craft brew.

This had all the feel of a Sam Adams product. It was textbook, not creative. A heavy malt smell and flavor, without an overwhelming hop presence. It would, in fact, benefit from a stronger hop content. This is an immanently drinkable beer, but not one to go out of your vay to find.

from notes.

A: Poured a reddish-amber with a slight, bready white head receding to a minimal rim lacing around the sides of the glass.

S: a sweet toasted maltiness.

T: The initial flavor had a sweet and toasted maltiness, with a light breadiness and light ripe fruitiness. There was some light brown sugar sweetness and a dry roasted caramel on the finish.

M: smooth, soft, and creamy.

D: Drinkability was nice by style, making for a sweet, earthy campfire drink in the fall. One I wish they would re-brew.

An amber colored beer with a big off white head that stays at a good level, leaving a lot of lace. Grainy sweet malt aroma with a little hop kick. Wheat-like and grainy malt plays to hops just perfectly in the flavor, very well balanced. The Vienna malt used is very complex and interesting. Extremely clean and crisp from start to finish, as it should be. I'd describe the aftertaste as "fresh grain". Another great lager from Boston Beer Co. They make some of the tastiest lagers out there, I'm glad to see them tackle another style, and a rare one at that. I'm looking forward to this being available in six packs next year. Until then I'll enjoy it along with the other great beers in the Winter Classics pack!

This is a keeper from Sammy. Low-key, but tasty. The aroma cold from the fridge was was malty, with a suggestion of chocolate, and the flavor was quite malty. As the beer warmed, it thinned out a bit and let the hops jump in. Slightly tart, but quite pleasant and a good companion for food.

The beer pours a limpid deep copper color, the head massive, but desiccates quickly, leaving a fine sheet of lace, both light tan in color. Malts dominate the nose, but clean and fresh nonetheless. Front has light sweet malt taste, the top middling. This beer finishes with a gratifying hopped presence and is charmingly acidic with a droughty aftertaste. Quite a pleasant drinking beer as “Lagers/Pils”, as my past ranting and ravings has shown are not my favorite style, but I like this one. Ranks #686 on my current 1000 beer master list.

Pours a reddish brown, slightly clowdy with a small, thin head of fine bubbles which disapates quickly. Smell is sweet, malty. I don't have a good "sniffer" anymore and my allergies are kicked in. Taste is sweet, mostly malt, touch of citrus in the middle, a bit "oily". It's almost too sweet but I will say this is up on my list with Hex Nut Brown from Goose Island and favorite beers. I will get again and again!!
