Billed as a sour double IPA, 450 North just can’t help themselves. Chocked full of mango, coconut, cream, soursop and vanilla, there’s really nothing that resembles IPA in sight.
The familiar smoothie-rich pour that’s expected from theirs Slushy series dulls the glass with a heavy silted, sepia cream density. As a patient froth pulls from the ale, the nose is awaken by bold candied citrus and tropical fruit. Very sweet with its first sip, the rich cereal, malt, fruit flavor and cream has the ale kicking off like pudding.
A rich and candied mango flavor takes charge as the ale coats the middle palate. The cream candy effect of cereal, cream, coconut and vanilla all work toward a true smoothie character. Slim in anything bitter or hoppy, the ale carries a playfully tart taste into an otherwise sweet, fruity and milkshake finish.
Full bodied, mildly cloying and rich from start to finish, the ale has a little to do with sour ale but nothing really at all with IPA. It’s another slushy-style beer and perfectly suited tor those who prefer alcoholic candy.
