473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Dec 5 2022 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a deep, clear brownish-bronze colour with ruby red highlights; situated atop is roughly one finger of dense, creamy, beige-tinged head that settles off within two minutes or so. A thin collar is left surrounding a filmy cap, with appreciable lace deposition as you sip away at the glass. Malty aroma of roasted grains, toasted bread, cocoa krispies and mild coffee, with just a hint of caramelized sugars.
A decent dark lager - flavours of roasted malts & grains at first, with mild coffee and carob by mid-sip. A little more sugary on the back end, with hints of treacle, caramel and just a touch of sweetened cocoa powder; it dries off a little in the aftertaste, but there are lingering hints of malt sweetness. Medium-light in body, with low carbonation and a smooth, slightly slick mouthfeel that I didn't find especially refreshing. One can is easy to finish, but multiples would quickly become tiresome.
Final Grade: 3.64, a B grade. Collingwood's Backcountry is not a schwarzbier, if that's what you were hoping for: their marketing copy deliberately avoids that description, and the beer itself lacks the dry finish I'd expect from a good schwarz. That's not to suggest that this is a bad lager, just that it's a little on the sweet side: recommended to fans of sweeter lager styles, not only Euro dark lagers but also amber lagers, dunkels, et al. Good pick for a cold winter/spring night - I'll pick it up once in a while, if I'm in the mood for a malt-forward lager.
