For reasons I don't need to go into here, I had to try this one * No freshness date but laser printed on the can bottom it reads FINALLY LEGAL. Now I can even hate this beer and still like the brewery at least.
Hazy but not murky, golden yellow in color and a bit over charged, it threw a quick 4 inch head that mushroomed over the rim but stayed firm. A 2 inch mound of clotted foam remained after the slump, sloping down from rim to liquid, with a dense ring of lace drapes.
The aroma does not scream "double dry hopped" as the can informs. A light floral nose, some vanilla bean and lemon but not a lot going on for me.
The flavor is hop forward even at 60 degrees f , mild malt sugariness tries to balance the bite but fails, lacking depth.
The Brewery website claims this to be a "hybrid" ( see what they did there?) blending traditional west coast hop with the NEIPA style, It's full of all the trigger words like" soft bitter, tropical fruitiness, dank and piney, etc.
For me, this is a citrus forward IPA that lacks body and malt complexity. It doesn't even have distinct hop profile, which may be what they were shooting for. Grassy and pine resin-ey bitterness and grapefruity burps , there is little body or mouthfeel to support the dryness left by the hops.
It may sound like I don't like this but I do. I don't love it and probably won't buy it again but I will try other SYBC beers.
Overall, worth a try, your results may vary.
